Oct 12, 2019 | Sailing
ANNAPOLIS, Maryland – Five top 10 finishes highlight Tulane sailing's first day of action in the Jen Harris Women's Showcase Finals, as the team currently stands in 15th among 18 of the top teams in the country.
"We are very fortunate to be competing against such a tough fleet of competitors," head coach Charles Higgins said. "This event is the same level and features many of the same teams we can expect in the national championship later this spring. We still have a ways to go, but to be sitting 15th in the nation right now is great. We started to make some major improvements toward the end of the day. Hopefully we can continue to improve upon that as we go into tomorrow."
Skipper Ciara Rodriguez-Horan sailed alongside crew Grace Siwicki in the Division A races, standing in 12th place with 87 total points. The duo notched an impressive second-place finish in the fourth race of the day, also recording seventh-, fourth- and eighth-place finishes on the water.
In the Division B boat, skipper Caroline Benson and crew Lydia Brown had a best performance of the day in the team's third race, finishing in third overall. The two stand in 16th after eight races, totaling 109 points.
The Green Wave's 196 total points put the team ahead of Fordham (214), Northeastern (215) and Tufts (220).
Brown leads the regatta with 87 points, followed by Harvard with 88 and Yale with 99.
Back home in New Orleans, Tulane finished in second and third overall in the Baldwin Wood Regatta, defeating Texas A&M Galveston, Texas and Baylor, while falling only to New Orleans.
The A and B Division teams put together four first-place finishes in the regatta on Lake Pontchartrain, with the Green Wave's first team totaling 109 points and the second team recording 115.
The women's team is back in action tomorrow, set to sail the remaining 10 races to wrap up the Showcase Finals at Navy.
