Oct 20, 2019 | Sailing
NEWPORT, Rhode Island – The Tulane sailing team recorded an impressive second-place finish in the Coed East Coast Showcase Tournament, adding five top 10 finishes in eight races to close out competition on Sunday.
"The team really came out on fire this morning and performed exceptionally well, placing in the top two in four of the first five races," head coach Charles Higgins said. "We had a slight hiccup in the middle of the day. A combination of small mistakes and a little bad luck. But we came on strong to post a third-place finish in the last race of each division to push us up into second place overall for the regatta."
The Green Wave's 174 total points put the team ahead of 15 top teams, falling only to Rhode Island in first with 149 points.
Skipper Cameron Giblin and crews Caroline Benson and Quinn Keenan recorded second- and third-place finishes to highlight the team's results on day two, finishing in fifth among the A Division teams. The three totaled 90 points after 14 total races.
In the B Division boat, skipper Asher Zittrer alongside crews Grace Siwicki and Ciara Rodriguez-Horan won the first race of the day before finishing in second and third in two of the remaining three races. The team's success in the final few races moved them from fifth to second place, totaling 84 points in the regatta.
"These last few weeks have been a grind for the team and I'm very proud of where we are at the moment," Higgins said. "Everyone involved has been integral to us getting to this point. Both our coed and women's teams are among the top 20 in the country and we're just getting started."
The Olive and Blue are back in action next weekend, headed to Galveston, Texas to compete in the SEISA Fall Coed Regatta on Saturday and the SEISA Fall Women's Regatta on Sunday.
