Baseball Posts Split in Exhibition Against Ragin’ Cajuns
Nov 3, 2019 | Baseball
LAFAYETTE, La. – The Tulane baseball team got its first taste of fall by taking on the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns at Russo Park on Sunday and came away with a split of the day's action with a 6-2 defeat in game one but winning the three, three-inning situational contests with 2-0, 4-1 and 5-1 score lines.
Â
"As the day went on, we got better each inning. We had an opportunity to play and pitch lots of our guys," head coach Travis Jewett said. "We handled the ball defensively pretty good, had lots of guys attack the strike zone from the mound and had some good at-bats in opportunistic moments."
Â
In the first game, Tulane scored a pair of runs on five hits with no errors, while the Ragin' Cajuns scored six runs on 11 hits with an error.
Â
With the three situational games, both teams began with no runs while Tulane took a 1-0 lead in the second and Louisiana-Lafayette taking a 1-0 lead for the third and final game of the day. Tulane was impressive at the plate throughout and finished with 16 total hits and 10 runs, not including the 1-0 lead in the second game, while Louisiana-Lafayette scored one run on five hits.
Â
Five different Tulane players earned hits in the first game, led by sophomore Hudson Haskin who drove in both of the team's runs on a 1-for-4 outing. Ethan Groff was 1-for-5 with a run scored, with Luis Aviles going 1-for-2 with a run scored and Trevor Minder and Luke Glancy each having a hit.
Â
Nine Green Wave pitchers saw action in the opener, with Braden Olthoff, Clifton Slagel, Robert Price and David Bates each pitching shutout innings. Slagel struck out three, while Olthoff and Price each had a pair of strikeouts.
Â
In the second half of the day the Tulane offense went to work, as five different players earned multiple hits paced by Grant Mathews who went 4-for-6 with a double, RBI and three runs scored. Minder went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI and a run scored, Frankie Niemann going 2-for-2 with a double, two RBI and a run scored, Aviles 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored and Ethan Groff going 2-for-5 with an RBI.
Â
The Green Wave used only eight pitchers, with junior Justin Campbell being the only hurler on the day to get multiple innings on the mound. Campbell, along with Connor Pellerin and Adam Grintz each had a pair of strikeouts, while Keagan Gillies, Landon Boeneke, Bryce Mackey, Krishna Raj and Joey Phelps helped keep Louisiana-Lafayette off the board.
Â
"There's room for improvement for sure, but lots to build on as well," Jewett said. "I'm looking forward to getting better this week during our training heading into next weekend against South Alabama."
Â
Tulane will host South Alabama next Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. in New Orleans. The exhibition contest will be free and open to the public.
