Sailing Defeats Four Teams in ICSA Match Race National Championship
Nov 3, 2019 | Sailing
MARBLEHEAD, Massachusetts – The Tulane sailing team earned a sixth-place finish in the ICSA Match Race National Championship, as the group of Green Wave freshmen defeated four teams in the competitive regatta.
"I'm very pleased and proud of our team's performance this weekend," head coach Charles Higgins said. "To bring a team of all freshmen and finish sixth in the country for this discipline is a great accomplishment for the team."
After falling to Tufts in the first race of the day on Sunday, the Olive and Blue bounced back to defeat Wisconsin for the second time this weekend.Â
"The team did an incredible job of overcoming not only a penalty but a considerable lead that Wisconsin had developed halfway around the course," Higgins added. "On the second half of the race, we were able to pull even before overtaking them, eventually extending to a resounding victory."
Skipper Asher Zittrer and crews Quinn Keenan, Cam Farrah and Caroline Benson were just short of pulling off a fifth-place overall standing to defeat Tufts in the determining round, but fell just short.
"Tufts was able to control us early, and despite our best efforts we were unable to catch them," Higgins said. "The result is bittersweet. The team is pleased to have done so well, but knows they were so close to the top. We will continue to build on this, and with time we will achieve much more."
The Green Wave defeated Wisconsin, Eckerd, Bowdoin and Washington in the competition. Stanford won the regatta, followed by Georgetown in second and Jacksonville in third.
The team heads to the West Coast next weekend to sail in its final regatta of the fall season, in the ICSA Singlehanded Championships in Santa Barbara, California.
