NEW ORLEANS, La. – After a strong regular season campaign, the Tulane volleyball team will begin its run to an National Invitational Volleyball Championship title Friday afternoon when the Green Wave takes on the New Hampshire Wildcats at 3 p.m. CT at Colgate University in the opening round.
Tulane takes on the Wildcats first at Cotterell Court Friday afternoon, with the hosting Colgate Raiders taking on Boston College later that night. The two winners from previous day will meet on Saturday at 4 p.m. CT to determine the regional winner and team to advance to take on the winner of the Bowling Green regional.
A link to live stats as well as a free live video stream of the entire weekend via the Patriot League Network will be available at TulaneGreenWave.com.
The Green Wave, with a 21-10 overall record, take to the NIVC tournament for the second time after their run last year got them all the way to the championship match against Iowa State. This year, Tulane is one of 14 teams with at least 20 wins in the field this season, with 32 teams in all vying for the chance to call themselves NIVC Champions.
Tulane is one of five teams in all from the American Athletic Conference to qualify for the postseason, with UCF and Cincinnati opening play in the NCAA Tournament beginning Thursday, while Tulsa, the Green Wave and Houston all begin play in the NIVC beginning Wednesday and into the weekend.
Last time out, the team participated in the inaugural American Athletic Conference Volleyball Championship earning a first-round win over Houston in five sets before falling to Cincinnati in the semifinals. Tulane has been successful in neutral-site contests this year, earning a 5-1 record in tournament play.
Being named to the first-ever American Athletic Conference Volleyball Championship All-Tournament Team, Lexie Douglas continues to have a solid end to her junior campaign where she leads the team in kills, kills per set and double-doubles for the Green Wave. Douglas' 362 kills are a new season best total for the Texan, as she is also second in service aces and third in digs.
The middle combo of sophomore Kayla Dinkins and freshman Lauryn Green have proven to be a handful for opposing teams throughout the season, with Dinkins leading the team in blocks and Green leading the team in hitting percentage. Dinkins still ranks in the top five in total blocks and top 15 in blocks per set, while Green is in the top 15 in hitting percentage among freshmen nationally.
Amanda Giardina leads Tulane's trio of setters with 592 assists on the season, averaging 5.24 per set. Jenna Ibieta is second on the squad with 390, while Taylor Henigsman has 253.
Senior Kaylie McHugh's 544 digs and 4.46 digs per set average are tops for the Green Wave, while also leading the team with 42 service aces and having over 150 for her career which is fourth all-time.
Tulane has never played New Hampshire or Colgate in volleyball, while a potential matchup against Boston College would be just the second ever between the two sides. Both the Wildcats and Raiders lost in the semifinals of their league tournaments, while the Eagles finished seventh in the ACC.
