Tulane Falls to South Alabama, 62-53
Dec 7, 2019 | Women's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University women's basketball team fell to South Alabama, 62-53, at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in Devlin Fieldhouse.
Tulane (4-6) outrebounded South Alabama (4-5) 43-30. The Olive and Blue recorded nine assists, five steals and five blocks. Junior Arsula Clark led the Green Wave with 14 points, a career-high 15 rebounds and four assists. Junior Krystal Freeman added 12 points, 12 rebounds and two steals, while sophomore Mia Heide logged eight points and eight rebounds.
"It's frustrating because I thought we did a lot of things really well today," Green Wave head coach Lisa Stockton said. "We played a team today that shoots 25 threes and they make 8-to-10 a game. We held them to five. That was one of our goals. We held their leading scorer to 10 points. Those are really positive things for our defense. We outrebounded them by 13, that's very significant. For us, it's about scoring. We shot pretty well in the first half then we came back and slowly declined, as far as scoring. That's something we've got to fix during exams because that's been a real problem for us. We've got to get to where we can consistently score and not just one half or one quarter. I definitely believe we have talent; we've just got to figure out a better way to use it."
The Jaguars cut the Green Wave's lead to 45-43 at the end of the third quarter. Heide led the Olive and Blue in third with six points and five rebounds. South Alabama took the lead at 54-52 lead with three minutes to play then closed the game on an 8-1 run to set the final score at 62-53.
The Green Wave opened the game on a 7-0 run, but USA was able to tie the game at 16-16 with just under two minutes left in the first quarter. A three from senior Kayla Manuirirangi gave the Green Wave a 19-16 lead after the first quarter. Both teams traded baskets in the second quarter and Tulane took a 31-26 lead into the half.
In the first half, the Green Wave shot 48.0 (12-25) percent from the field and 45.5 (5-11) percent from three, while the Jaguars were 28.6 (8-28) from the floor and 27.3 (3-11) from behind the arc. Tulane grabbed 18 rebounds and dished out eight assists in the opening half.
Shaforia Kines led the Jaguars with 23 points, while Antoinette Lewis grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds.
Up next, the Green Wave will be back in action on Dec. 20 against Texas Southern for the Tulane Classic. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in Devlin Fieldhouse.
