2019 Tulane Baseball Preview: Outfield
Feb 11, 2019 | Baseball
The Tulane baseball team will have no shortage of options when looking to choose which players will roam in the outfield for the squad in 2019, with a bevy of returning players and quality newcomers competing for spots.
While the team will have to replace the bat and fielding of MLB draft pick Grant Witherspoon, the Green Wave will have no less than five players who all saw action in the rotation at some point last season.
The first two options are both seniors in Tyler Heinrichs and Ty Johnson.
Heinrichs played in 47 games last year, making all 30 of his starts in right field. The Georgia native hit three doubles and four home runs, tallying 18 RBI over the course of the season. His first home run of his career came at USF on a three-run blast.
Johnson floated between both left and right field, while also getting in a few games behind the plate at catcher, hitting .282 with six doubles, 24 runs scored, 11 RBI, 15 walks, and a .353 on-base percentage. He produced 14 games with multiple hits, including having two hits and scoring twice against LSU.
Another name is redshirt junior Luke Glancy, who played in 30 games for the Green Wave last season while making 16 starts. Glancy only had 66 at-bats in the year but played a hand in a couple of big comeback wins with the first coming in the wild 17-16 win over Houston where he had two RBI and three runs scored and pinch-hit outing in drawing a walk to defeat LSU.
Returning as a sophomore, local product Stephen Sepcich will be looking to build on the 21 games he played in as a freshman in 2018, making seven starts in the outfield.
Looking to reclaim his spot in the rotation is redshirt sophomore Kobi Owen who suffered a season-ending injury just four games into the campaign last year.
One of the new faces to the group is Hudson Haskin from New York. Haskin was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 39th round of the 2018 MLB Draft, coming off a senior season where he posted a .515 batting average while tallying nine homeruns, 37 RBI, and 36 stolen bases.
The last freshman is a local product from Mandeville in Logan Stevens. Stevens won back-to-back state championships at nearby John Curtis, where on the mound he held a 0.2 ERA while posting a .320 batting average with 21 RBI and five triples as a senior in 2018.Â
