Baseball Defeats Ole Miss on Bedgood Walk-Off Home Run
Feb 23, 2019 | Baseball
Â
Holding the lead for the better part of five innings, Tulane (6-1) had to battle back again in the final at-bat after Ole Miss (3-2) reclaimed the lead with a three-run home run in the top of the ninth to go up 12-11. Against one of the top closers in the SEC, Bedgood took the 2-1 pitch over the fence in right to seal the win and even the series at 1-1.
Â
"We came out punching, and we talked about it last night that I had full confidence in that our kids were going to come out and play well today," Green Wave head coach Travis Jewett said. "I'm real proud of David. He's been swinging the bat well and even though he's been getting pinched out of the lineup a bit he has kept his head in the game and the way he came through today was awesome."
Â
Grant Mathews finished a triple short of the cycle in Saturday's win, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Kobi Owen supplied the power going 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs, two walks, five RBIs and three runs scored.
Â
For the second consecutive day Tulane produced double figure hits and out-hit the Rebels 17-10. Nine different batters produced hits for the Green Wave, while Mathews, Owen, Hudson Haskin, Trevor Jensen, Jonathon Artigues and Acy Owen each produced multiple hits.
Â
Starter Keagan Gillies struck out six and scattered five hits in his second Saturday start of the season, allowing five runs in five innings of work. Trent Johnson pitched the next two innings and allowed four runs, one earned, with two hits, two strikeouts and a walk, while Connor Pellerin (1-0) earned the win after allowing three runs on three hits with two strikeouts.
Â
Parker Caracci (0-1) earned the save on Friday in Ole Miss' win, but took the loss after he was only able to get one out in the ninth and gave up Bedgood's winner thereafter, striking out one and walking one. Of the five pitchers used by the Rebels on the day, none could keep Tulane off the scoreboard over the course of the game.
Â
Thomas Dillard drove in eight runs and scored twice in a 3-for-5 day, hitting a pair of home runs for Ole Miss in the loss.
Â
The Rebels used a pair of hits to plate a run in the opening inning of the game Saturday, as Tulane took to the plate in the bottom of the inning as the frame began with Ty Johnson reaching base after the ball got away from the catcher on a strikeout.
Â
After a popup, Jensen ripped a single to center to put two on for the Green Wave as the duo moved up a base each. Artigues stepped up to the plate next and plated Johnson on an infield single to tie the game at 1-1.
Â
In the second Kobi Owen drew a walk to open the inning, but on the next play Sal Gozzo singled as the ball hit Owen between bases to rule him out on the play with Gozzo safe at first. A single by Acy Owen through the right side allowed Gozzo to motor to third, scoring on the next play as Haskin hit a deep enough fly ball out to plate the shortstop to put the Wave up 2-1.
Â
In the third Gillies got the first out of the inning, but successive walks put two Rebel runners on base. A groundout advanced the runners to second and third and put two outs on the board, but Dillard lifted one over the fence in right for the two-run shot to put Ole Miss up 4-2, with Keenan following suit with a solo shot to right to make it 5-2 Rebels.
Â
Not to be outdone, Tulane got a double from Mathews with one out on the board to start the bottom of the third inning. Artigues came next with a single to left as Mathews came in to pull Tulane within two at 5-3. Artigues was picked off, but Glancy doubled through the right side to put one back on for the Green Wave.
Â
It proved huge as Kobi Owen blasted one over the fence in center for the two-run shot to tie the game with Ole Miss at 5-5.
Â
In the fifth, Artigues and Glancy drew one-out walks to put two on for the Green Wave as Ole Miss went to the bullpen again. It didn't matter for Kobi Owen who belted his second home run of the day to give Tulane the lead back up 8-5.
Â
Trent Johnson came on in the sixth and a solo home run would be the only run for Ole Miss in the frame, as in the bottom of the frame Kody Hoese doubled to left center with one out and Mathews drilled the first pitch he saw in his at-bat over the fence in right center for the two-run shot to extend Tulane's lead to 10-6.
Â
Ole Miss nearly turned the game back on its head in the top of the seventh, getting three runs on only one hit and an error that kept the inning alive and allowed the Rebels to pull to within one of Tulane at 10-9.
Â
Tulane was able to get an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth as Acy Owen singled to right and Haskin doubled through the left side to put two in scoring position. Kody Hoese was intentionally walked to load the bases, as Jensen singled to center to push the Tulane lead to 11-9.
Â
Looking to close out the game in the ninth, consecutive singles put a pair of Ole Miss runners on base. Dillard's second pitch of the at-bat was the one he was looking for as he homered to right to give Ole Miss the lead at 12-11.
Â
After a strikeout, Kobi Owen drew a 3-2 walk, setting the table for Bedgood to end the game on his second home run of the year.
Â
The finale of the series is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch Sunday at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
