NEW ORLEANS – The outdoor track & field season resumes in Lafayette this weekend as the Green Wave travel west along I-10 to take on the Louisiana Classics on Friday and Saturday. The event will be held at the Ragin' Cajuns Track/Soccer Complex.
Tulane will be competing against a large contingent of Louisiana schools plus a few opponents from out of state. Included in the field are LSU, Louisiana Tech, McNeese State, UNO, Nicholls, Southern, Southeastern Louisiana, ULM, Stephen F. Austin and several smaller schools.
Action begins Friday afternoon with the javelin at 3 p.m. On the track, the 200 will take place starting at 6:30 p.m.
The bulk of the events will be held Saturday. On the field, the discus and long jump begin at 10 a.m. and will be followed by the pole vault, high jump and triple jump throughout the morning and afternoon. Races begin on the track at 2 p.m. with the 4x100 relays. The 4x400 relays will conclude the evening at 7 p.m.
This weekend will mark Tulane's second meet of the outdoor season but will have a much larger contingent of participating student-athletes than the first meet. A small group of Green Wave athletes last competed at the Southeastern Strawberry Relays in late February where they picked up three victories and 10 top-five finishes.
Evans Kipchumba (1500), Tom Coe (800) and Emma King (high jump) were the Tulane winners while James Thomas Watson threw the javelin 56.64 meters (185-10) for the new seventh-best mark in program history.
After their time in Lafayette is over, the Green Wave will prepare for their next meet even farther west along I-10 in Houston. Tulane will take on the Victor Lopez Classic hosted by Rice on March 22-23.
