Women's Track & Field Gets Team Victory in Lafayette

LAFAYETTE – The Green Wave women's track team had a tremendous day in Lafayette, winning the Cole-Lancon Conference Challenge at the Cajuns' Track Complex on Saturday.
Tulane's women finished with 199 team points, more than 45 points higher than second-place Louisiana.
The Tulane men, with a much smaller squad size than anyone else at the meet, took fourth place with 53 points and had two victories.
The Green Wave women picked up their victory thanks to 10 first-place finishes in the meet's 18 total events.
The points started piling up early with Trina Malej scoring 10 for the Green Wave in the long jump. Malej reached a distance of 5.54 meters (18-2.25), recording a mark in the event for the first time in her college career. While she was second overall behind an unattached athletes, Malej's score was better than any of the college competitors, giving her the victory. Danielle Wember was third among college long jumpers by reaching 5.38 meters (17-8) and scoring six points.
Malej got the double victory later in the triple jump, reaching 12.14 meters (39-10) to tie for the victory with an unattached athlete. She was way ahead of any other college athlete in the field, as second place among college athletes came in at 11.20 meters. Malej's performance got the Green Wave 10 more points.
But Malej wasn't the only Tulane athlete who doubled up on victories.
Aldrianna Dupree ran away with another win for the Green Wave, taking first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.04 seconds. Kyah Loyd scored two points by finishing sixth among college competitors in 12.60 seconds.
Shortly after that, Dupree took the 200-meter crown as well with a time of 24.82 seconds. Oneke Gwan was fourth in 25.40 seconds.
And Loyd's day was not done either. After her sixth-place showing in the 100, she dominated the 100 hurdles to claim a victory in 13.99 seconds, nearly four tenths of a second ahead of the second-place finisher. Louise Jones scored four points with her fifth-place finish in 15.44 seconds, and Pauline Helm was eighth in 15.96 seconds.
In the men's 100, Jalen LaCour made his Tulane debut by placing seventh among college competitors, running to a time of 11.02 seconds.
Another Tulanian claimed a win in the 400 with Maya Harewood crossing the finish line first in 55.81 seconds. Tahja Mitchell was close behind her with a time of 55.97 seconds for second place, and Gwan took fourth among college runners with a time of 58.60 seconds. Kyra Ness-Lanckriet was seventh in 1:00.08.
As the distances grew, so did the Tulane victories. Mckenzie Melius took the title in the 1500 and 10 points for the Green Wave with a time of 4:49.95, and Emma Newton was right behind her in second place with a mark of 4:56.62. LaMori came in sixth in 5:01.32, and Belanger was 11th in 5:27.02.
Tulane's men won the 1500 as well, with Tom Coe claiming the victory in 4:06.85. Pierce Hill was fifth in 4:21.89.
While Newton was the runner up in the 1500, she earned the victory in the 3K. The senior crossed the finish line with a time of 10:42.55 for Tulane, scoring 10 more points for the team. Mary Catherine Stovall scored 8 points with her second-place time of 10:54.32. Bridgid Selfors was fourth in 11:05.77.
Evans Kipchumba starred in the men's 3K with a first-place time of 9:06.92 for 10 points. Carlos Zervigon made it a 1-2 sweep for Tulane, taking the runner-up spot in 9:18.62. Andrew Kipkemboi was seventh in 9:40.64, Ian Valdez was eighth in 9:41.62 and Jamie Polakoff was ninth in 9:48.77.
Tulane closed the day strong as well, taking first in the 4x400 relay. Mitchell, Loyd, Ness-Lanckriet and Harewood raced the Green Wave to 10 points with a time of 3:53.82.
In the pole vault, Tulane finished 1-2-3 with Rebekah Markel winning with a height of 4.13 meters (13-6.50). Nastja Modic set a new personal best by clearing 4.03 meters (13-2.50) for second place, and Alex Potts took third with a height of 3.93 meters (12-10.75).
Also in the field, Olivia Hicks won the high jump when she cleared a height of 1.64 meters (5-4.50) for 10 more points. Emma King was third in 1.60 meters (5-3).
James Thomas Watson was Tulane's only thrower of the day, taking second place in the javelin but setting a new personal best in the process. Watson threw the javelin 59.17 meters (194-1), breaking his previous best by more than two full meters.
In the 400 hurdles, Jones took second and scored eight points with a time of 1:03.83, and Pauline Helm was third in 1:06.68 for six points.
In the 800, Jennifer LaMori took third in 2:24.49, scoring six points for the Green Wave. Paige Fatland added five points with her fifth-place finish in a time of 2:27.40, and Reid Belanger was ninth in 2:38.51.
The men's 800 saw Coe place third in 2:00.05 for six points, and Pierce Hill was ninth in 2:09.73.
Earlier, the 4x100 team started the day with a third-place finish in 47.28 seconds. Dupree, Harewood, Loyd and Mitchell were the quartet for the Green Wave.
Jalen LaCour also ran his first 200 for the Green Wave men, placing sixth for 4 points for Tulane with a time of 22.82 seconds.
In the discus, Kyla Denwood was 11th with a distance of 35.63 meters (116-11).
Coming up for Tulane will be two different meets next weekend. The Green Wave will take on the Mt. SAC Relays in California along with the LSU Bayou Bengal in Baton Rouge.
