Baseball Falls to Privateers, 15-10
Apr 16, 2019 | Baseball
The Green Wave (25-12) outhit the Privateers (18-19) 11-8 on the night, battling back from a 9-2 deficit to tie the game, but would be unable to keep the opposition off the board to keep the game close.
Seven different Tulane players earned hits in the game, paced by Grant Mathews who went 2-for-4 with a home run, triple and four RBI. Trevor Jensen, Kody Hoese and Frankie Niemann also earned a pair of base knocks for the Green Wave.
Tulane used 11 pitchers against New Orleans, as Ryan Green (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing two runs on a pair of walks after tying the game in the fifth. In all, the Green Wave issued 12 walks to New Orleans batters with three wild pitches and two hit batters.
After the first where the Privateers scored eight runs to open the game, Mathews got Tulane on the board with a solo shot to make it 8-1. After a ground out, Sal Gozzo followed suit with a solo home run of his own to make it 8-2 New Orleans.
New Orleans pulled back a run in the bottom half of the second to make it 9-2, and it would stay that way for two innings until Tulane took to the top of the fifth and sent 12 batters to the plate in an inning where the team scored seven runs on six hits and two errors to tie the game at 9-9.
Jensen and Hoese singled to open that inning, as Luke Glancy poked one through the right side for the RBI single. Niemann doubled down the left field line to plate another, as after a New Orleans pitching change David Bedgood singled to right to bring another run in.
Mathews cleared the bases with a two-run triple to right center, as a sacrifice bunt by Jonathon Artigues brought in Mathews to pull the Green Wave within one. A dropped fly ball in right allowed Gozzo to reach third, as a fielding error at third right after on a Jensen grounder tied the game at 9-9.
New Orleans scored six unanswered runs from that point to go on top 15-9, as Tulane would only be able to plate one more run coming in the top of the eighth for the final run of the contest.
Tulane will be back in action in two days, opening a three-game American Athletic Conference series at Memphis on Thursday at 6 p.m.
