NEW ORLEANS – With just two meets left in the regular season, the Green Wave track and field teams will be heading one state over into Mississippi this weekend to take part in the Southern Miss Open in Hattiesburg.
Tulane will be competing against the host Golden Eagles as well as other teams including Mississippi State, South Alabama, Southeastern Louisiana and ULM.
Live video will be available at a cost through FloTrack. Live results will be available as well through Adkins Trak.
The meet is scheduled to begin Friday afternoon with the javelin and the pole vault.
On Saturday, the rest of the events will be held starting with the high jump at 11:30 a.m. and the 3K on the track at 12:10 p.m. As usual, the 4x400 relays will close things out later in the afternoon.
The pole vaulters this weekend, while still officially competing in the Southern Miss Open, will be jumping in Mobile, Alabama, instead of Mississippi. Rebekah Markel, coming off a victory at the LSU Alumni Gold meet in the pole vault, will be joined by teammates Nastja Modic, Alex Potts, Rose Brutkiewicz and Megan Fitzgerald in Mobile. Markel is the defending American Athletic Conference Female Field Athlete of the Week.
Last weekend in Baton Rouge, Tulane picked up three event victories and had five student-athletes set new personal bests. Evans Kipchumba (5K), Tahja Mitchell (400) and Markel (pole vault) all won their events.
With the conference championship meet just three weeks away, Tulane currently has 12 different performances that would score at the conference meet including two from Mitchell. Emmanuel Rotich currently has the fastest 3K steeplechase time in the country, and Kyah Loyd's time in the 100 hurdles from last weekend would place her on the podium as well at the conference meet. Markel is also the current conference leader in the pole vault.
Following this weekend's meet, the Green Wave will conclude their regular season with the Tom Telez Invite in Houston on May 3. The American Athletic Conference Championships are up after that, taking place on May 10-12 in Wichita, Kansas.
