Track & Field Races to Four Victories at Southern Miss Open

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Tulane track & field team won four events and posted 15 top-five finishes over the weekend at the Southern Miss Open. Six student-athletes also set new personal bests during the meet.
Tulane ran its fastest 4x100 relay of the season on the women's side, racing to a victory in a time of 46.06 seconds. The Green Wave quartet of Kyah Loyd, Maya Harewood, Oneke Gwan and Tahja Mitchell beat out second-place Jackson State by a whopping 1.75 seconds.
Later in the afternoon, the 4x400 relay team got another victory, sweeping the relays on the day. The group of Harewood, Mitchell, Louise Jones and Loyd ran a time of 3:41.59, more than eight full seconds faster than the second-place team.
Rebekah Markel added yet another victory to her pole vault resume as well, picking up her third consecutive win in the event and fifth total in six competitions this outdoor season. The senior cleared 4.20 meters (13-9.25) for the fourth time this year for the win.
In second place was freshman Alex Potts, who set a new personal best and moved up to fifth all-time in program history with a clearance of 4.05 meters (13-3.5). Nastja Modic was fourth by clearing 3.8 meters (12-5.5), and Rose Brutkiewicz placed sixth with a height of 3.70 meters (12-1.5).
Emmanuel Rotich had the team's second win of the day, taking the 1500 title with a time of 3:51.31, just two seconds off his best-ever time. Tom Coe was fourth in the 1500 in 3:54.15. Pierce Hill came in 20th in 4:19.46, and Joshua Cheruyot was 21st with a time of 4:25.80.
Loyd just missed a victory in the 100 hurdles, taking second place with a time of 13.73 seconds. She was only .11 seconds away from the first-place finisher.
Like Loyd, Mitchell came up just a bit short in the 200. Mitchell raced to a time of 23.99 seconds just missing out the event victory by .04 seconds. Harewood was third in the event, coming out with a time of 24.21 seconds. Kyra Ness-Lanckriet finished eight in the 200 in 25.38 seconds.
In the men's 200, Jalen LaCour placed 14th with a time of 21.95, his new college best by nearly a full second. Jaetavian Toles came in 19th in 22.28 seconds, racing in his first collegiate 200.
Tulane got a second-place showing from Skyler Guillot in the women's javelin, as she came up just .17 meters shy of her personal record. The junior reached a distance of 41.10 meters (134-10), beating out the third-place finisher by more than eight feet but missing out on first place by 12 feet.
In the men's javelin, James Thomas Watson took fourth behind a throw of 54.83 meters (179-11). Watson reached 54.09 on his first throw but bettered that on his third attempt of the day.
Saturday's events began with the 3K where Mary Catherine Stovall knocked three seconds off her personal best. Stovall came in fourth place in the event, crossing the finish line in 10:35.58.
In the men's 3K, Carlos Zervigon placed fifth and Evans Kipchumba took sixth. Zervigon's time of 8:47.69 was a new personal best, and Kipchumba came across the line just a tenth of a second behind him with a time of 8:47.79. Andrew Kipkemboi was 19th in 9:28.31, Ian Valdez took 22nd in 9:46.99 and Jamie Polakoff was 24th in 9:54.20.
In the 1500, Mckenzie Melius set a new personal best with her fifth-place run of 4:39.97, a full five seconds faster than she had run the 1500 before. Jennifer LaMori took seventh in 4:42.66, and Reid Belanger was 12th in 5:04.23.
In the 400, Oneke Gwan was Tulane's top finisher with her time of 56.79 seconds, her new personal best. Ness-Lanckriet was 14th in 58.41 seconds.
Later in the 400 hurdles, Louise Jones was just a second shy of her personal best with a time of 1:03.33 for fifth place. Pauline Helm was next in line, taking sixth with a time of 1:04.61 which is just .24 seconds shy of her PR.
Paige Fatland took seventh in the 800, racing to a finish of 2:25.35.
The high jump early Saturday saw Olivia Hicks come up just shy of her personal best, clearing a height of 1.65 meters (5-5) to take seventh place. Emma King was ninth in 1.60 meters (5-3), also barely missing a new personal best.
Jorien Vallen competed in his first high jump of his college career, getting over the bar at 1.95 meters (6-4.75) for 11th place.
In the long jump, Danielle Wember placed 10th in the field, reaching a distance of 5.35 meters. Trina Malej was 14th with a distance of 5.32 meters.
Corey Dauphine was the Green Wave's fastest runner in the 100, posting a time of 10.77 seconds. Jalen LaCour was next for the Green Wave, taking 18th in 10.95 seconds. Freshman Cameron Carroll ran his first collegiate 100, placing 32nd with a time of 11.33 seconds.
The Green Wave will compete in their final regular-season meet next week, heading to Houston for the Tom Telez Invite on Friday.
