Baseball Drops Opener to No. 11 ECU

GREENVILLE, N.C. – In the first game of the showdown of the top two teams in the American Athletic Conference, the Tulane Green Wave would suffer a 14-0 defeat to the No. 11 ECU Pirates Friday night in Greenville.

The Pirates (32-10, 12-1 The American) plated a pair of runs in the first and six in the third to jut out to an eight-run lead, scoring two in the fourth, seventh and eighth.

Tulane (26-15, 8-4) produced eight hits, paced by Jonathon Artigues who went 2-for-4. Trevor Jensen, Frankie Niemann, Grant Mathews, Luke Glancy, Logan Stevens and Collin Burns had the others, but the team ended the night stranding 15 runners on base over the course of the game.

Kaleb Roper (5-4) suffered the loss as he allowed 10 runs, nine earned, on eight hits in four innings. Roper struck out three and walked three in the game, as Ryan Green struck out four in three innings.

ECU's Jake Agnos (6-2) stymied the Green Wave bats to the tune of nine strikeouts in five innings and allowing two of the Tulane hits, walking five. The three remaining Pirate pitchers combined to allow six hits over the course of the final four innings, striking out four and walking one. Â

Bryant Packard and Spencer Brickhouse had two-run home runs for the Pirates, as Jake Washer drove in three on two hits in the win for ECU.

Game two of the series is set to begin Saturday at 3 p.m. CT at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
