Baseball Drops Contest to ECU, 8-2
Apr 27, 2019 | Baseball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Looking to bounce back after a tough loss Friday night, the Tulane Green Wave wouldn't be able to string enough offense together after the No. 11 ECU Pirates jumped out to a big lead early in an 8-2 loss Saturday afternoon at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Â
After being shut out the night before, Tulane (26-16, 8-5 The American) scratched a pair of runs across against the Pirates (33-10, 13-1), but wouldn't be able to get more to make the game closer after ECU scored six of their eight runs in the first three innings of the game.
Â
Junior Kody Hoese had three of the Green Wave's seven hits in the game, earning two doubles on the day, as Jonathon Artigues had two base hits and drove in a run late. Â
Â
Coming on in a tough spot, pitcher Justin Campbell had a solid day on the mound as he only allowed one run on two hits with six strikeouts. It was a career-long five-inning outing for the sophomore, who made his 24th appearance of the season in relief of Keagan Gillies (2-2) who pitched 1.1 innings and gave up five runs on seven hits in the loss.
Â
ECU's Jake Kuchmaner (4-1) struck out six and walked two, allowing two runs in the game, with six strikeouts and two walks in 8.1 innings.
Â
Seth Caddell was 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored for the Pirates, as Bryant Packard was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Â
ECU scored a pair of runs in the first, three in the second and got one more in the third to go up 6-0 early. In the top of the fourth, Hoese ripped a shot down the left field line to trot in on the double. Hudson Haskin legged out a single to short to put runners at the corners, as a double play grounder to short allowed Hoese to score to put Tulane on the board at 6-1.
Â
Kuchmaner came out to try and get the complete game, as after a strikeout to open the ninth Frankie Niemann singled to left to end his day. Sam Lanier came on in relief, as Artigues poked one through the left side to score Tyler Heinrichs who came on to pinch run to make it an 8-2 game. However, that would be the final run of the game as a fielder's choice grounder and fly out ended the game.
Â
First pitch for game three of the series against the Pirates is set for 11 a.m. CT in Greenville.
