New Orleans Upends Baseball, 14-9
Apr 30, 2019 | Baseball
The Green Wave (27-17) on two occasions battled back to tie the game with the Privateers (22-23) through the first three innings of the game. However, a pitching battle broke out between both sides that didn't see either team get any runs across through the next four. That changed in the eighth, and Tulane would do what it could to mount the comeback late but wouldn't have enough to overcome New Orleans in the end.
Tulane produced 14 hits in the win, with four players having two or more paced by David Bedgood, Hudson Haskin and Luke Glancy who combined for nine with three each. The trio accounted for the team's three home runs against New Orleans, as Glancy drove in three while Bedgood and Haskin each brought in two on the night. Haskin also finished a double short of hitting for the cycle.
The middle duo of Ryan Green and Robert Price combined to hold the Privateers to just two hits with five strikeouts and two walks in a combined 4.1 innings of the game, with both working out of key situations with runners on base when entering the game. Connor Pellerin (2-3) suffered the loss as he allowed four runs, three earned, on a hit with two walks.
Luther Woullard drove in four on three hits for the Privateers, as Antonio Gauthier plated three with a run scored on two hits. Pitcher John Barr (4-4) earned the win as the two runs he gave up on Glancy's home run was after New Orleans jumped out to their large lead in the top half of the eighth.
After scoring two runs on three hits in the top half of the first, it took Tulane until the bottom of the second to respond as Jonathon Artigues singled to center to reach base with an out. Following a fly out to center, Bedgood went the opposite way with a towering home run to left to knot the game with the Privateers at 2-2.
New Orleans scored two more runs in the very next half inning, but it wouldn't take the Green Wave as long to respond as Sal Gozzo got a single and Trevor Jensen was hit by a pitch to put two Tulane players on base. Although a double play put two quick outs on the board, Haskin tripled to left to plate Gozzo and pull Tulane within one, as Mathews singled up the middle to tie the game at 4-4.
Artigues drew a walk as Tulane found themselves now down by double figures, as Glancy got the game back to single digits with a two-run home run to left center to make the game 14-6. In the ninth, Jensen singled to right and advanced two bases forward on wild pitches. Kody Hoese drove him in with a sacrifice fly to right to make it a 14-7 game.
Haskin took the first pitch he saw over the fence in left to pull Tulane to within six at 14-8. Mathews doubled to right center to keep the hit parade going, as after a strikeout Glancy singled up the middle to score Mathews from second to put the score at 14-9.
Tulane will be back in action this weekend, hosting the UCF Knights for a three-game American Athletic Conference Series at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
