Baseball Falls in Extras to Wichita State, 12-11
Apr 6, 2019 | Baseball
Initially falling behind by four runs in the first inning, the Green Wave (19-11, 2-2 The American) fought back to take a 6-4 lead before extending their advantage with five runs on two home runs in the eighth inning to make the score 11-5. After two quick outs in the top of the ninth inning, Wichita State (18-12, 3-1) rallied for six runs to tie the game.
Tulane managed to drive in 11 runs on just eight hits, but left eight runners on base and walked six, providing too many opportunities for the Shockers.
Junior shortstop Sal Gozzo and junior third baseman Kody Hoese blasted home runs in a big eighth inning and Justin Campbell (1-1) struck out five Wichita State hitters in the contest before eventually suffering the loss.
Tulane starter Kaleb Roper was able to impress after a tough first inning giving up four runs in the before scattering five hits and just one run over the course of the next six innings. The right-handed senior retired 10 consecutive batters between the first and fourth innings to keep the Green Wave in the contest.
Roper needed only 88 pitches to get through seven innings, collecting three strikeouts while walking only one.
"He pretty much drew the line in the sand and just settled in and didn't give up, didn't give in, just kept attacking," Tulane head coach Travis Jewett said. "And then as you were able to see we were able to cut it and take the lead."
Freshman right fielder Hudson Haskin led off the bottom of the second inning against Wichita State starting pitcher Preston Snavely (3-2) by stretching a routine single into extra bases. The aggressive baserunning allowed Frankie Niemann to drive him in with a single deposited into left-center field.
In the following inning Hoese cut the deficit in half with a single to the right side of the infield, beating the shift before sophomore designated hitter David Bedgood ripped a double over first base and down the right field line, scoring Hoese easily.
The score remained 4-2 until the Green Wave came to bat in the sixth inning against Snavely. Bedgood began the inning with a walk and Haskin fouled off four pitches before drawing a second consecutive walk. Snavely drilled junior left fielder Grant Mathews to load the bases, prompting a pitching change. Sophomore southpaw Alex Segal walked Niemann on five pitches to bring in Bedgood, and junior pinch hitter Kobi Owen plated Haskin with the tying run when he drew the fourth walk of the inning. Jonathon Artigues drove in Mathews with a fielder's choice to take the lead and Gozzo reached on an error to make the score 6-4.
Wichita State scratched out a run in the top of the eighth before the Green Wave exploded in the bottom half. Walks to Niemann and Artigues brought Gozzo to the plate with the game tensely fixed at 6-5. Gozzo drove the first pitch he saw from reliever Connery Peters deep into the night, eventually settling far beyond the right field wall for his second home run of the year.
After Gozzo's three run blast, senior first baseman Trevor Jensen doubled down the left field line to force another pitching change. Sophomore Jacob Lindemann replaced Peters and faced a red-hot Hoese who jumped all over a 1-1 pitch for his 15th home run of the season.
Despite plenty of offense, Wichita State matched Tulane swing-for-swing. Their 13 hits bested Tulane's eight, and managed to score eight runs with two outs while only stranding six. Their six run ninth inning tied the game, and the Shockers were able to steal the momentum with another run in the top of the 11th and holding on for the victory.
Tulane will be back in action on Saturday for a doubleheader at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium, beginning at 2 p.m. in New Orleans. Game two will begin at 6:30 or approximately 45 minutes following the end of game one.
