Dear Next Wave – Harlyn Wyatt
May 14, 2019 | Women's Basketball
Dear Next Wave,
My first semester in college, I went to the wrong classroom building. Multiple times.
I also didn't know how to read a schedule and thought that "TH" meant I only had that class on a Thursday. Because of that, I almost missed my first Tuesday class.
Next Wave, there will be tons of little lessons like that you learn along the way during your four years at Tulane, but just know that this could be the best four years of your life.
Everyone on campus – especially my coaches and teammates with Tulane women's basketball – were incredibly supportive during my time in New Orleans. From the coaching staff who forgave early mistakes in drills and practices to the seniors like Tierra Jones and Chinwe Duru who brought this little freshman along, I always had help if I needed it.
Some other pieces of advice from a current senior to a future freshman:
Four years of college has changed me a lot, and it will change you, too. Being here my first summer helped me get the lay of the land, and it lessened the shock a bit when fall came around and the student population grew substantially.
In the time since my first year, I've learned a lot about myself. I've learned that I want to become a good example for my younger teammates and always do the right thing. I've learned how to be a leader. I've learned how to focus on my future.
And Next Wave, there are few places better than Tulane for focusing on my future. I've gotten great lessons on developing my career. I have connections now for internships and jobs. I've learned how to meet people and network for the rest of my life. Even basics like learning how to write resumes and cover letters. You'll get all that and more as you begin your time with the Green Wave.
This year, Coach Stockton celebrated her 25th anniversary at Tulane. Alums from all over the country came back to honor the woman who was their coach, too. Seeing that reunion was really special. We met old Tulane student-athletes and heard their stories. They were excited for us and very open with everything they shared. This program and this university are like one big family.
I'm thrilled to have been a part of it, and you will be, too. Years from now, I'll be coming back and telling my stories to even newer members of the Green Wave family.
All the best to your next four years.
Sincerely,
Harlyn Wyatt

Some other pieces of advice from a current senior to a future freshman:
- The campus seems big at first, but you get used to it.
- If you are lost or confused, ask someone to clear things up. Don't be afraid to ask questions.
- Listen to your coaches. Every tiny detail is important, even if it doesn't seem that way at the time.
- Learn to manage your time and stay organized. With travel and practice, your deadlines will come at you quick.
- Cherish your teammates and enjoy the time you have together. It will be over before you know it.
- Explore the city! New Orleans has incredible things to do, food to eat and music to hear.
