NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Tulane baseball season puts a cap on the 2019 regular season by hosting a three-game American Athletic Conference series against the UConn Huskies this Thursday-Saturday at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Â
Things get started Thursday night at 6:30 p.m., with Friday also at 6:30 p.m. and the season finale getting underway at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. The team will honor the seniors and graduating class with a special ceremony Friday pregame, while honoring the seniors between innings during Saturday's game.
Â
All three games of the series will be streamed live online through Tulane All-Access, with a link to live stats as well at TulaneGreenWave.com. Todd Graffagnini will provide play-by-play for the series on WRBH 88.3 FM in New Orleans.
Â
Tulane heads into the final three games of the regular season looking to cement its spot as the second seed in the league tournament that gets underway next Tuesday at Spectrum Field in Clearwater, Florida. The Green Wave come into the contest with a 30-22 record and 11-9 mark in the league.
Â
For the second consecutive week, the Green Wave will take on a close challenger for that spot in the Huskies, as UConn and their top 40 RPI are currently fifth in the standings with a 10-11 mark in the American and 31-21 overall record.
Â
Tulane asserted its favorable home dominance on Tuesday night, defeating the South Alabama Jaguars 11-1 in seven innings to start the week. It was the first double figure scoring output for the Green Wave in nearly a month as the team pounded out 13 hits with four home runs and two doubles. Tulane has 82 home runs as a team which is tied for fifth all-time in a single season in program history.
Â
Producing 23 of those is junior Kody Hoese, who on Wednesday was named one of the 25 semifinalists for the 2019 Golden Spikes Award which goes to the top amateur baseball player in the country. The Indiana native continues to lead the team in a host of categories, along with being tied for the lead nationally in home runs.
Â
The team also got a strong performance from the pitching staff, getting the start from Justin Campbell who is now in the top 10 all-time in appearances in a single year with 29. He struck out five and allowed just one of the two hits South Alabama had in the contest, while Ryan Green earned his first win of the season as he struck out four and walked one.
Â
The solid pitching of the relievers lately should bolster the scheduled starts for Kaleb Roper, Keagan Gillies and Chase Solesky for the weekend heading into the double-elimination league tournament next week.
Â
Tulane dropped its series to the Huskies last year, but the last time the two sides squared off in New Orleans the Green Wave posted a sweep of then-ranked UConn in three games.
Â
The Huskies defeated Rhode Island 5-4 on Tuesday and have won six of their last 10 overall. However, UConn is 11-12 in games away from home, dropping all three games at ECU the last time they faced a league team on the road. Â
