Sep 13, 2019 | Sailing
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane sailing team is back in action this weekend for the team's first regatta of the fall season, heading to Galveston, Texas to compete in the SEISA Singlehanded Championship Qualifier.
Green Wave sophomore Ciara Rodriguez-Horan and freshman Cam Farrah will race for the Women's Singlehanded Conference title on Saturday, while freshmen Cameron Giblin and Asher Zittrer will sail in the Men's Singlehanded Qualifier.
"This first weekend will be a tough test for us, but we're excited and ready," head coach Charles Higgins said. "Overall I'm excited and hopeful we will come away with great results from all four this weekend."
The winners of each regatta will qualify for the ICSA Singlehanded National Championship, held at UC Santa Barbara from Nov. 8-10.
Rodriguez-Horan is the defending Women's SEISA Singlehanded champion, finishing first in the 2018 regatta as a freshman to earn a spot in the National Championship.
Though Farrah, Giblin and Zittrer enter the weekend lacking collegiate sailing experience, the three have proven they are fully qualified to compete on the water.
Farrah, who was voted Fort Walton Yacht Club Junior Sailor of the Year in 2017 and 2018, sailed in the U.S. Sailing Multihull Championships and was recognized as the Top Junior Finisher and Top Female Finisher.
Giblin comes to New Orleans as the reigning high school national champion, while Zittrer finished among the top 20 in consecutive men's Laser Radial Youth World Championships.
"Asher [Zittrer] and Cameron [Giblin] are two of the best freshmen of the country and I know they both have a great chance to win the men's division tomorrow. They will be up against some really good competition so we will have to be very disciplined from the first race on," Higgins added. "On the women's side Ciara [Rodriguez-Horan]Â and Cam [Farrah] have been working hard the last few weeks and, like the boys, I expect each of them to also battle for the top spot."
