Sep 2, 2019 | Women's Volleyball
NEW ORLEANS, La. – After a 3-0 start to the season, the Tulane volleyball team will look to get the home schedule off on the right foot on Tuesday night, taking on the Southeastern Louisiana Lions at Devlin in Fogelman at 7 p.m.
Â
On Tuesday, the school will commemorate the 2018 NIVC finalist squad with a banner unveiling, while fans who have their ticket stub from the football team's win over FIU last week can purchase tickets for $3.
Â
The Green Wave come into the match after opening a season for the second consecutive year with three straight sweeps of opponents at the Doubletree Classic in Lafayette last weekend. Tulane defeated UTEP, UIW and Louisiana-Lafayette by 3-0 scores on the weekend and will look to stay unbeaten when the Lions come to town.
Â
Tulane proved to be an offensive juggernaut over the weekend, as the squad comes into the second week of competition hitting .281 as a group. The team averaged 14 kills and 13.22 assists per set against the trio of opponents.
Â
Six different players finished the weekend with double-digit kills, led by Erika Hansel who was one of three Green Wave players to be named to the all-tournament team after she finished with 27 kills over the weekend, averaging three per set with a .300 hitting clip. Kayla Dinkins, the tournament MVP, hit .500 for the weekend and finished with 20 kills, as she and Hansel both tied for the lead in blocks with seven.
Â
The defense at the net proved to be a catalyst in the three opponents combining to hit just .114 against Tulane in the tournament, averaging two blocks per set while the back row for the squad had a digs per set average of 14.56.
Â
Markenzie Benoit, the third member of the all-tournament team, tied the squad lead in solo blocks with two over the weekend and had six total, while Makala Heidelberg led the squad in digs with 36 and a digs per set average of 4.50.
Â
Jenna Ibieta and Amanda Giardina led the way for the servers, with Ibieta producing 42 assists and averaging 5.00 per set, followed by Giardina's 37 and 4.62 per set average.
Â
The Green Wave have won five of their last six home openers heading into the contest, as the team has an all-time record of 39-5 against Southeastern Louisiana in matches. The Lions come into the contest at 0-3 on the year, dropping all three of their contests at a tournament held by Jacksonville State over the weekend.
