Sep 27, 2019 | Women's Golf
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Freshman Carlota Palacios led the Tulane University women's golf team and all golfers in the first round of the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational with a score of three-under 69. The Green Wave closed the first round ninth as a team at 15-over 303.
Palacios opened the tournament with a birdie on the par-four first hole then reeled off three-straight birdies on the fifth, sixth and seventh holes. On the back nine, she registered a birdie on the par-four 11th hole. The Vitoria, Spain, native finished the day tied for first individually at three-under 69.
"Great round for Carlota today," Green Wave head coach Stew Burke said. "We had it going great through the front nine, but didn't manage to battle the tough afternoon conditions coming in. We go early in the morning and will look to capitalize on favorable conditions and climb the leaderboard."
Freshman Hanna Liu closed the day tied for 33rd at four-over 76. Liu recorded eight-straight pars from the fifth to the 12th holes.
Junior Jennifer Rosenberg tied for 52nd at six-over 78 after the first round. She had a birdie on the par-five seventh hole.
Senior Haydyn Gibson shot eight-over 80 to tie for 59th after round one. Gibson had birdies on the second, eighth and 18th holes.
Freshman Sandra Vazquez finished the first round tied for 73rd at 11-over 83.
Kentucky leads all teams at three-under 285. Palacios and Penn State's Mathilde Delavallade are tops on the leaderboard at three-under 69. The second round will begin with golfers teeing off from holes one and 10 at 7:30 a.m. Saturday.
