Green Wave holds off Memphis to remain undefeated in league play
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University women's basketball team remained undefeated in American Athletic Conference play thanks to 59-55 victory over Memphis Saturday afternoon at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
Tulane never trailed in the game as it collected its fourth straight victory and evened their mark to 8-8 overall and 3-0 in league play on the year. With the loss, Memphis dropped to 9-7 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
"I think Memphis is a very physical and aggressive team," Green Wave head coach Lisa Stockton said. "I thought we did a nice job in the first half of really attacking them. We got to the rim a lot. We defended them pretty well. We rebounded with them, I thought that was really key. Two huge stats for us in this game were our lack of turnovers and our free throws. Those have been two problems we've had, but we corrected them tonight. Even though we didn't shoot very well, we made it happen in the other categories."
Junior Arsula Clark led the Green Wave with 17 points. She also had a game-high four steals. Clark now has totaled 11 steals in the past two games. Junior forward Krystal Freeman joined Clark in double figures, as she finished with 13 points. Freeman also added a game-high five assists.
Junior guard Sierra Cheatham pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and scored six points, as she recorded her 500th career point.
As a team, Tulane forced Memphis into 15 turnovers. The Green Wave finished the game with a 16-12 edge in points off turnovers.
The Green Wave jumped out to an early 10-3 lead at the 6:36 mark of the first quarter. Clark led the Tulane charge with five points. Tulane led by as many as eight points in the opening frame, but Tigers fought back to trim the Green Wave lead to just three points by the end of the quarter.
Tulane came out hot in the second quarter, as it opened up a 15-point lead (32-17) at the 5:05 mark of the frame thanks to a 15-3 run. The Green Wave would go on to take a 38-29 advantage into the locker room.
The Olive and Blue led by as many as 13 points in the third quarter, but the Tigers would not go quietly as they trimmed Tulane's lead to five at the end of the quarter. In the fourth quarter, Memphis tied the game at 48 apiece with 7:34 to go.
Over the final minutes of the game, Tulane outscored the Tigers by an 8-6 count to secure the win. The key play in the final stretch came on a three-point play from Freeman, which gave the Green Wave a four-point lead with 1:46 remaining.
