NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane men's tennis team heads to Palo Alto, Calif., for its first big challenge of the 2020 spring campaign to face 11th-ranked Stanford in the first round of the 2020 ITA Kickoff on Saturday, January 25. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m., (CT) at the Taube Family Tennis Center on Stanford University's campus.
In the four-team pod, the Green Wave (2-0) hold the No. 4 seed, while the Cardinal (1-0) are No. 1 in the draw. The winner of Saturday's matchup advances to Sunday's final against the winner between No. 13 California and Miami (Fla.). A consolation match will also be played Sunday between the two teams that do not win on Saturday.
SCOUTING STANFORD
Hosting an ITA Kickoff regional for the second year in a row, the Cardinal enter the weekend coming off a 4-0 home win over UC Davis on Jan. 10 in their first match of the season. Stanford is home to two nationally-ranked singles players, including No. 18 Alexandre Rotsaert and No. 54 Sangeet Sridhar. The Cardinal defeated Tulane, 4-0, in the second round of consolation play at last year's ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Champaign, Ill., just one year after defeating the Green Wave, 4-1, in the regional final of the 2018 ITA Kickoff event hosted by Cal in Berkeley, Calif.
ITA KICKOFF WEEKEND
The kick-off event features 16 regionals across the country hosted by the top 16 NCAA Division I programs in the final 2019 team rankings with each site featuring four teams seeded No. 1-4. Winners from each region will earn automatic bids to the 2020 ITA National Indoor Championships, which will be held Feb. 14-17 at the University of Wisconsin.
At the 2019 ITA Kickoff event, Tulane used wins over 18th-ranked Tennessee, as well as host and 19th-ranked Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla., to punch its ticket to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships for the first time in program history.
IN THE RANKINGS
The Green Wave possess three players listed in the ITA's national singles rankings, led by senior Ewan Moore at No. 32. Senior Dane Esses holds the No. 47 spot, while junior Hamish Stewart stands at No. 90.
DOUBLES DOMINANCE
Juniors Hamish Stewart and Akos Kotorman combine as Tulane's best doubles tandem after posting an 11-1 record at the No. 2 spot in the lineup last spring, including a 3-0 mark against American Athletic Conference foes. The duo has won nine consecutive dual doubles matches dating back to 2019.
STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE
Tulane will play a minimum of 10 teams that earned NCAA Tournament bids in 2019, including Stanford, California/Miami (Fla.), Mississippi State, Texas Tech, Texas, TCU, Minnesota, Oklahoma State, UCF and USF. Texas claimed the 2019 NCAA title, while TCU reached the quarterfinals. California, Mississippi State, Oklahoma State and Stanford all reached the round of 16.
