Swimming & Diving Opens Season with a Win at Delta State

CLEVELAND, Mississippi — The Tulane swimming and diving team opened its 2020-21 season with a win on Saturday, defeating Delta State 201-42 on the road.
The Green Wave finished first in all events except one, taking the top three places in seven of 13 total events.
"The swimmers raced well today," head coach Leah Stancil said. "We have a lot to work on but this is a good starting point to help us prepare for the rest of the season."
Freshmen Katie Lipsey, Paige McKenzie and Caroline Alonzo shined in the diving events, taking the respective first (248.02), second (246.97) and third (246.00) spots in the three-meter event to start off the meet. Sophomore Gabby Hebert finished fifth with a score of 210.07.
Alonzo finished first in the one-meter diving event (254.46), followed by McKenzie in second (248.24), Lipsey in third (239.32) and Hebert in fifth (194.85).
"For our divers, this was a really great way to start off the season," diving coach John Sirmon said. "The girls came in with a ton of energy and dove really well, which was what I was looking for. It also highlighted our weak spots so we know just what to focus on before our next meet."
The Olive and Blue finished first and second in the 200-yard medley relay, with freshman Danielle Titus, senior Kate McDonald, sophomore Mya Drost-Parra and senior Courtney Barker finishing first with a time of 1:46.87 and freshman Riley Hendrix, freshman Christiana Williams, sophomore Hailey Roberti and sophomore Drew Petereit finishing second with a time of 1:48.18.
Freshman Jennifer Gougelmann and sophomore Edie Newman earned second and third respective finishes in the 1000-yard freestyle, finishing with times of 10:50.84 and 11:04.82.Â
The Green Wave dominated in the fifth event of the day, taking the first-, second- and third-place spots in the 200-yard freestyle. Junior Noa Heron led the way with a time of 1:55.05, followed by junior Iza Pelka in second (1:56.05) and Hailey Roberti (1:57.72) in third.Â
Petereit earned a first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.26 and was followed by senior Jeni Griffin in second (25.65) and sophomore Ashley Carollo in fourth (26.06).
Next up for Tulane, McDonald took the number one spot in the 200-yard IM, finishing with a time of 2:06.99. Freshman Gianna Spremullo finished third (2:11.74), Williams finished fourth (2:14.66) and Autumn Keats-O'Connor finished fifth (2:16.62).Â
The Olive and Blue posted strong standings in the 100-yard butterfly, taking the gold, silver and bronze spots. Roberti led the way for the Wave with a new personal-best time of 58.12, followed by Drost-Parra in second (58.38) and freshman Winter Craig in third (58.46).
Tulane continued on with its success in event nine, taking the top four spots in the 100-yard freestyle. Pelka was the first to finish with a time of 54.26 and was followed by Petereit in second (55.09), Gougelmann in third (55.54) and Keats-O'Connor in fourth (56.34).Â
Newcomer Titus led the way for the Green Wave in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing first with a time of 56.13. Hendrix was right behind her in second (56.75) and was followed by Barker in third (58.20) and Carollo in fourth (1:00.32).Â
In the 500-yard freestyle, Heron earned a first-place finish with a time of 5:07.77 and was followed by Craig in second (5:15.50), Spremullo in third (5:20.24) and Newman in fourth (5:.22.29).Â
McDonald capped off her day by taking the first-place spot in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.09), while Williams finished in third place (1:06.03) and Griffin finished in fourth (1:10.43).Â
In the final event of the day, Tulane finished first and second in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Titus, Hendrix, Pelka and Barker took first with a time of 1:36.89 while the team of Keats-O'Connor, Craig, Carollo and Heron finished second with a time of 1:41.25.
The Green Wave head back on the road in two weeks to compete in the two-day Dual-A-Pa-Looza in Houston, Texas on Oct. 30-31.
