2020 Tulane Baseball Positional Preview: Outfield
Feb 10, 2020 | Baseball
The first in a series looking at the 2020 Tulane baseball team.Â
Â
Â
The Tulane baseball team will have no shortage of options at its disposal for multiple positions heading into the 2020 season, and what head coach Travis Jewett has dubbed the "green ocean" of outfielders at the ready proves to be one of the deepest and robust groups heading into the season opening series against Florida Gulf Coast.
Â
The process of looking at the outfielders begins with preseason All-American and Preseason All-American Athletic Conference team pick Hudson Haskin. A freshman All-American by various publications from a season ago, opens his sophomore campaign as one of the top players in the country as he was lauded this offseason with preseason All-America accolades by Collegiate Baseball, Perfect Game/Rawlings, D1 Baseball and the NCBWA.
Â
With a grand slam as his very first collegiate hit, Haskin went on to play in 56 of the Green Wave's 58 games last season, making 50 starts in the outfield. He finished the season hitting .372 on the year with 77 hits, including 19 doubles, four triples and 10 home runs. While finishing second on the squad in batting average, doubles, total bases and slugging, while finishing third in RBI, hits and runs scored, Haskin's batting average was first among freshmen nationally.
Â
Getting the opportunity to see as much playing time as he did was due in part to the loss of Ty Johnson early in the season due to injury. The Washington native was only able to play in seven games in 2019, making only five starts before having to miss the remaining 51 games of the year while recovering from surgery.
Â
Johnson earned a redshirt and has returned to the team this year, looking to build off his junior season of 2018 where he played in 42 games and made 41 starts, having to spend time in the outfield and behind the plate as a catcher. In the seven games he did play in last year, Johnson earned four hits with two runs scored and three stolen bases, two shy of matching the five he had in all of 2018.
Â
Hitting from the left side and playing in both left and right field, another redshirt season returning to the team this season is Luke Glancy. Glancy played in 43 games and made 33 starts, producing a good bit of fireworks as he hit the go-ahead home run against Saint Joseph's in North Carolina, while hitting a pair of home runs against Southeastern Louisiana.
Â
Now a sophomore, Logan Stevens was able to make his mark in the outfield last year after playing in 20 games and making six starts. With the time he did have at the plate he was able to make it count, including having his best day to date last season on the road at No. 10 ECU, helping pull out the finale against the Pirates with a 2-RBI double and two runs against the Pirates.
Â
While not seeing any playing time last year, redshirt freshman Ethan Groff will be an option for Tulane in the outfield along with newcomer Liam Cogswell. Cogswell, a native of Boca Raton, Florida, was an outfielder and pitcher at North Broward Prep, where he batted .314 with a home run and eight RBI on a team that finished second in its league as a senior.
