Men’s Tennis Sweeps Singles in 6-1 Win Over SMU
Feb 16, 2020 | Men's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane men's tennis team earned a 6-1 home victory over American Athletic Conference foe SMU on Sunday afternoon at the City Park Tennis Center.
Despite weather delays pushing the match back nearly two hours, the match got underway with doubles. The Mustangs took the upper-hand early, collecting wins on courts on and three, respectively, to take a 1-0 lead.
Tulane (5-4) punched back at the start of singles, as senior Tim Ruetzel earned the first point for the Green Wave with a 6-1 win in his first set. That would be all Ruetzel would need however, as an injury to his opponent, abbreviated the match and tied things up, 1-1.
Senior Luis Erlenbusch put the Wave in front for good, collecting a straight-set win, 6-4, 6-3, over Ethan Leon on court three. Senior Dane Esses had a dominating performance in the first set, 6-0, over SMU's Jordi Redelijk, but he came back to win the second set, 6-3. Esses pulled it back in to win the final set, 6-4, and push the Mustangs to the brink.
Junior Akos Kotorman secured the win for the Green Wave on court six, topping Gardiner Perotti, 7-5, 6-3. Junior and 64th-ranked Hamish Stewart earned a comeback win after dropping the first set, 6-3, to win each of the next two sets, 6-4, respectively. The reigning American Athletic Conference Co-Player of the Week now owns an 8-1 mark this spring.
Senior and 49th-ranked Ewan Moore battled into his third set after winning the first, 7-6, and losing the second, 6-1. Moore went back-and-forth with SMU's Caleb Chakravarthi in an intense end to the match with a tiebreaker at 6-6. Moore proved victorious in the tiebreaker to complete the singles sweep.
Tulane takes a long break before a road match at reigning NCAA champion Texas on Friday, March 6 at 5:30 p.m. The Green Wave will then turn around for another road contest on Sunday, March 8 at 1 p.m. against TCU.
