Braden Olthoff Named American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week
Feb 24, 2020 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS, La. – After opening a key series on the road with a record performance, Tulane junior pitcher Braden Olthoff was named the American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week the league announced on Monday afternoon.
Â
It's the first time a Tulane pitcher has earned one of the league's weekly honors since Kaleb Roper earned the award on March 12, 2018. It's the second time a Green Wave player has been honored by the league, as senior Ty Johnson was named to the league's weekly honor roll after week one of competition.
Â
The junior was also named one of Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's National Players of the Week as well.
Â
Olthoff opened a key showdown with Cal State Fullerton on the road last Friday by hurling a complete-game shutout, allowing three hits while striking out 16 in a 1-0 win over the Titans at Goodwin field. Tulane went on to claim its first ever series victory against Cal State Fullerton in program history.
Â
The 16 strikeouts in the win is tied for the third-most in a game by a Tulane pitcher in program history, as at one point in the game Olthoff retired 12 consecutive batters. It was the most strikeouts in a game for a Tulane pitcher since Kaleb Roper struck out 12 against Houston Baptist last season, as well as the first complete-game victory for a Tulane pitcher since the win over UCF by Roper in the conference tournament last May.
Â
Josh Bobbitt in 1998 was the last Green Wave pitcher to have 16 strikeouts in a contest.
Â
Tulane will be back in action on Wednesday, opening the annual Pelican Cup in-season series with the New Orleans Privateers at 6:30 p.m. at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
