Feb 28, 2020 | Sailing
NEW ORLEANS — No. 20 Tulane sailing is gearing up to sail in two regattas this weekend, as some members of the team are heading to Charleston, South Carolina to compete in the Bob Bavier Team Race while the rest of the squad is staying home to host the Big Easy Fleet Race.
"I'm looking forward to a challenging weekend. At the Bob Bavier Team Race, we will face nine teams, five of which are ranked in the top nine in the country," head coach Charles Higgins said. "The team had been working hard and progressing steadily and I'm hopeful we will be able to build off of our last event and keep forward."
The Green Wave will sail against No. 3 Harvard, Eckerd, No. 9 College of Charleston, No. 2 Boston University, No. 8 Navy, UC Santa Barbara, No. 5 Yale, Jacksonville and South Florida in the two-day team race in Charleston. The team is set to sail nine races in each of the respective two rounds on Saturday and Sunday.
Cameron Giblin, Quinn Keenan, Ciara Rodriguez-Horan and Caroline Benson will sail the skipper position this weekend, alongside crews Kit Stoll, Kate Lenhard, Stephen Hahn, Katie Cartiglia and Grace Siwicki.
"At the same time, we will have several others competing at home in the Big Easy Fleet Race against a couple of conference rivals," Higgins added. "Having so many on our team getting playing time at once is vital for our team's improvement, and I'm very pleased we are able to do that this weekend."
In the Big Easy Fleet Race on Lake Pontchartrain, Tulane welcomes Loyola, North Texas and Texas to New Orleans. Tulane will have three boats compete in the nine total races on Saturday, while Loyola, North Texas and Texas will each have two.
Luke Schumann, Katherine Byrnes and Eli Eckhouse will skipper boats one, two and three on Saturday, with crews Isabella Bentz, Josie Larkin and Brinton Hoover sailing with them.
In their last time on the water, the Green Wave finished fourth of eight in a competitive Nelson Roltsch Regatta. Tulane defeated UC Santa Barbara, USF, Wisconsin and Texas in the weekend competition, while College of Charleston finished first and was followed by Navy and Jacksonville in second and third.
