Feb 28, 2020 | Women's Beach Volleyball
NEW ORLEANS — Following its 2-0 opening weekend, the Tulane beach volleyball team is back in action and headed to Baton Rouge to compete against a competitive slate of opponents in the Tiger Beach Challenge.
The Green Wave are set to match up against Spring Hill College at 11 a.m., No. 1 UCLA at 2:45 p.m. and Texas A&M Corpus Christi at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday before heading back out on Sunday to face Houston Baptist (RV) at 10 a.m. and No. 2 LSU at 12 p.m.
"We are very excited for this coming weekend. Competing in five duals in two days will be a great test of our preparation this past fall and winter break, seeing how we are able to maintain our energy levels and decision-making abilities throughout the day," head coach Eyal Zimet said. "Facing off against some of the top programs in the nation will provide us with excellent opportunities to push our limits further and keep sharpening tools we have been working on over the past couple of months. We know what a privilege it is to compete in the sport we love and can't wait to leave it all on the sand this weekend."
Spring Hill College comes into the weekend with a 3-1 record, defeating William Carey University, Huntingdon College and Lagrange College, while falling to HBU in the team's season opener. Tulane owns an 8-0 series record against Spring Hill, earning a 4-1 victory in their most recent matchup in last year's Tiger Beach Challenge.
No. 1 UCLA heads to Baton Rouge with a 5-1 record so far this season, beating No. 8 Loyola Marymount, No. 5 Hawai'i, No. 3 LSU, and No. 19 Stanford (2x), before falling to LSU in the team's second match of the weekend. The Green Wave are 0-2 against the Bruins, facing off most recently at the FIU Surf N Turf in 2017.
Texas A&M Corpus Christi is set to open its season at LSU Beach Volleyball Stadium this Saturday. Tulane has never faced the Islanders, so this weekend's matchup will be the team's first.
Houston Baptist is 2-3 coming into this weekend, defeating Spring Hill and No. 9 Stetson while falling to No. 3 Florida State, No. 13 South Carolina and Tampa last weekend in Tallahassee. The Olive and Blue are undefeated against the Huskies, owning a 9-0 record.
The home team — No. 2 LSU — is 3-2 so far this year, recording a victory over No. 19 Stanford last weekend while going 1-1 against both No. 1 UCLA and No. 5 Hawai'i. Tulane holds a 4-8 series victory against the Tigers.
In last season's Tiger Beach Challenge, the Green Wave went 3-1 on the weekend. Tulane notched wins over Southern Miss, North Florida and Spring Hill, while falling to No. 4 LSU.
The Olive and Blue lost on only one court in their first two matches of 2020, sweeping North Alabama before beating UAB, 4-1.
