Feb 6, 2020 | Men's Basketball
HOUSTON – The Tulane men's basketball team dropped an American Athletic Conference road game, 75-62, at No. 25 Houston at the Fertitta Center.
Â
Teshaun Hightower led the Green Wave with 17 points and five rebounds, while K.J. Lawson added 13 points. Nobal Days scored in double-figures for the second time on the season with 10 points and made a pair of 3-pointers.
Â
Tulane (10-12, 2-8 AAC) held an early 6-5 edge just over five minutes into the action behind a pair of 3-pointers by Hightower, but Houston (18-5, 8-2 AAC) got its offense going with a mix of outside shots and points in the paint to generate a 24-4 scoring run down to the 4:40 mark to build a 29-10 lead.
Â
The Cougars' margin would not grow any larger in the period, but the Green Wave was only able to make six field goals in the first 20 minutes, as Houston took a 39-21 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
Â
Tulane showed renewed life to start the second half, making its first three shots and surging for the first seven points to cut the deficit to 11 just 90 seconds back into the action.
Â
The Green Wave cut the deficit to 10 points on three occasions and had a great look at the 10-minute mark to finally claw back within single digits with the score 54-44, but the Cougars countered with a 7-0 scoring run over the next two and a half minutes, forcing head coach Ron Hunter to use a timeout with 8:16 remaining.
Â
Despite Tulane outscoring Houston, 41-36, in the second half, the Cougars increased their lead back to 19 several times but would not grow its lead any larger for the duration of the game.
Â
The Green Wave finished the night shooting 19-for-52 (.365) overall, 8-for-27 (.296) beyond the arc and 16-for-21 (.762) at the free throw line, while the Cougars shot 30-for-56 (.536) from the field, 10-for-28 (.357) from outside and 5-for-11 (.455) at the foul stripe.
Â
Houston owned a 37-27 rebounding advantage and shot 62.5 percent from the floor in the second half on 15 shots made.
Â
Caleb Mills led three Cougars in double-digit scoring with 18 points, as Nate Hinton compiled a double-double with 12 points over 12 rebounds with seven assists.
