Bowling Finishes Sixth at Wildcat Classic
Feb 9, 2020 | Women's Bowling
NEW ORLEANS, La. – The No. 16 Tulane bowling team got a pair of top 10 individual finishes and earned seven wins as the Green Wave wrapped up play at the 2019 Wildcat Classic at the Boardwalk Bowl in Orlando and earned a sixth-place finish in Florida.
The Green Wave knocked down 12,187 total pins in the tournament to finish with a pin average of 181.9 over the course of the three days in Orlando, ending the weekend with a 7-5 overall record in competition.
Tulane was paced by freshman Amelia Vasquez who earned her second all-tournament team selection of the season as she led the Green Wave with a sixth-place finish after knocking down 1,181 pins in six games for an average of 196.83. Junior Madison McCall finish one spot back in seventh, also knocking down 1,181 pins and ended with an average of 196.83.
Sophomore Crystal Singh finished 26th overall and was the third Tulane player to knock over 1,000 pins down in the tournament, as Jenica Baron finished 30th and Veronica Petrinec 41st.
Due to the uneven number of teams, Tulane had to complete one more traditional match before taking to the bracket finals Sunday morning, defeating host Bethune-Cookman 906-699 to set the final seeding and set up a rematch against Medaille. Tulane had to rally to stave off defeat, eventually defeating Medaille 4-3 (171-138, 186-226, 154-161, 200-156, 187-211, 183-180, 188-162).
The energy needed to take down Medaille left the Green Wave a bit short in the next round against Florida A&M, as the Rattlers took the first three matches before Tulane won its first, with FAMU closing things out for the team in the next contest to win 4-1 (189-172, 185-156, 202-168, 139-171, 186-179) to finish in sixth place.
Tulane opened the tournament on a tear sitting in second place after the first set of Baker matches on Friday, knocking down 4,626 pins through five matches for a pin average of 185.0. The team fell to UAB in the first match 978-943, just falling short to Sacred Heart 962-921 after that. Bouncing back, Tulane earned big wins over Saint Francis 920-872 and Daemen 996-797, falling in the final match to Maryville 978-846.
There was movement throughout the tournament on Saturday, with Tulane finishing day two of the event in fifth place after knocking down 4,537 pins.
An 854-816 win over Medaille opened the day, following up with an 899-883 victory over eventual champion Stephen F. Austin. After a bye in action, the team tied with FAMU 908-908 to force a five-frame roll-off, which Tulane claimed to take the match. Day two ended with a 949-905 loss to Tusculum.
