NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University women's basketball team will travel to play Tulsa on Saturday, Jan. 15. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at the Reynolds Center on Tulsa's campus.
STARTING FIVE
1. Freshman Jerkaila Jordan has made a splash early in her collegiate career. She has been honored by the AAC four times. Back on Dec. 14 she was named Conference Player of the Week. She has led the Green Wave in scoring in five of the team's 11 games this season.
2. Jordan currently ranks in the top 10 in the American Athletic Conference in scoring (14.0) and field goal percentage (.450). She leads all freshman in The American in scoring.
3. Senior Krystal Freeman led the Green Wave last week to a pair of road conference wins. She averaged 19.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals in the wins at Houston and Cincinnati. Freeman was named AAC Player of the Week, LSWA Player of the Week and the NCAA's Starting Five after her performances.
4. Freeman leads the Green Wave and ranks fourth in the AAC with 8.8 rebounds per game. 5.
5. Senior Arsula Clark earned Preseason Second Team All-AAC honors. She currently ranks third on the team in scoring with a 13.3 points per game average. At ECU, she led the team in scoring with a season-high 28 points.
SERIES HISTORY – TULSA
• The Green Wave and the Golden Hurricane have met 32 times in program history with Tulane holding a 23-9 edge.
• The Green Wave won all three games against Tulsa last season. Tulane beat the Golden Hurricane 50-46 in Tulsa last season.
• Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton holds a 22-9 all-time record against Tulsa in her career at Tulane.
• Tulane has an 8-6 record under Stockton when playing in Tulsa.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN HURRICANE
• Tulsa enters its matchup with Tulane carrying a 3-4 overall record and a 2-4 conference mark. The Golden Hurricane is coming off a 75-49 loss at Houston.
• The Golden Hurricane leads the AAC in turnover margin at +6.57. Tulsa ranks in the top five in the conference in scoring defense (63.9), free throw percentage (.679), 3-point field goal percentage (.316), steals (10.1) and assist/turnover ratio (0.9).
• Tulsa takes care of the ball well and ranks 14th in the nation in turnovers per game at 12.7.
• Junior guard Maya Mayberry leads the Golden Hurricane with 13.1 points per game. She ranks ninth in the American in the category.
• Freshman guard Wyvette Mayberry is second on the team with 12.7 points per game. She also adds 3.4 rebounds a game.
• Wyvette Mayberry also leads the team with 3.4 assists per game. She is eighth in the conference in assists.
• Junior forward Desiree Lewis leads the team with 4.4 rebounds per game. She also adds 5.9 points per game.
• Tulsa head coach Matilda Mossman is in her 10th season on the bench for the Golden Hurricane and has posted a 117-166 mark since arriving in Tulsa.
• Mossman has collected a 267-261 overall record in her career. She previously made stops at Kansas State and Arkansas.
CARDIAC WAVE
• The Olive and Blue have had 28 of their last 40 games decided by 10 points or less dating back to last season. The Green Wave are 12-16 in those games.
• Within those 28 games, 19 were decided by five points or less. Tulane is 11-8 in games decided by five points or less dating back to last season, including going 2-1 in games that finished with the exact final score of 64-62.
• Although the Wave have played many close games in the last two seasons, Tulane has only played two overtime games in that time. The Olive and Blue beat Tulsa Jan. 8 and fell to Houston Feb. 1 in overtime last season.
• The Green Wave also had a knack for mounting double-digit comebacks last season. Tulane started the trend in the second game of the season as it overcame an 18-point deficit at Washington to take a 64-62 win over the Huskies.
• The Green Wave mounted 17-point comebacks at both Southern Miss and SMU as well.
AMONG THE LEAGUE LEADERS
• Tulane ranks among the league's top five in 16 different statistical categories.
• The Green Wave rank second the conference in scoring (70.0), scoring margin (+9.3), field goal percentage (.429), assists (15.5) and assist/turnover ratio (1.0).
FREEMAN IS BACK
• Senior Krystal Freeman returns for her senior season after leading the Green Wave in points and rebounds in the past two seasons.
• Freeman scored 15.0 points and grabbed 7.7 rebounds per game last season.
• Last season, the Pineville, La., native ranked sixth in The American in field goal percentage (.454), seventh in 3-point field goal percentage (.351), eighth in scoring (15.0), ninth in rebounding (7.7) and 12th in steals (1.7).
• Freeman opened the season with the 18th double-double of her career as she scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds against Nicholls.
• She continued to be one of the top players for the Green Wave, as she logged 19 points, eight rebounds and two steals at South Alabama.
• She currently leads the Green Wave with 14.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game.
FREEMAN EARNS ACCOLADES
• Senior Krystal Freeman was named American Athletic Conference Player of the Week, LSWA Player of the Week and NCAA Starting Five after averaging 19.0 points and 6.5 rebounds in wins at Houston (1/6) and Cincinnati (1/9).
• She opened the week with 20 points on 10-14 shooting at Houston. Freeman followed that with 18 points and six rebounds at Cincinnati.
FRESHMAN LEADS THE WAY
• Freshman Jerkaila Jordan currently leads the Green Wave with 34 assists and 10 blocked shots.
• She is second on the team averaging 14.0 points per game and third with 4.8 rebounds.
CLARK STEPS UP
• Clark stepped up last season for the Green Wave as a transfer from Louisiana Monroe. She led the team with 84 assists, 129 free throws made and 190 free throws attempted.
• She was second on the team with 12.7 points per game and added 4.9 rebounds.
• The Miami native was named Preseason All-AAC Second team.
• Clark narrowly missed recording the first triple-double in program history when she logged 18 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in the win over Cincinnati on Jan. 18, 2020.
• She opened her 2020-21 season right where she left off posting 17 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals at South Alabama.
• Clark poured in a season-high 28 points on 9-of-15 shooting at ECU back on Dec. 22. She also went 10-of-13 at the free throw line to complement seven rebounds and six steals.
• She led the Green Wave with 20 points and five rebounds against South Florida.
FREEMAN GRABS 600 BOARDS
• Senior Krystal Freeman recorded her 600th rebound with her seventh rebound against USF on Jan. 13. She has dominated the boards since her sophomore season. Freeman has logged two games with 20+ rebounds in her career.
