NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane women's basketball team will return to the court as they host Houston on Wednesday, Jan. 27. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
STARTING FIVE
1. Freshman Jerkaila Jordan has made a splash early in her collegiate career. She has been honored by the AAC five times. Back on Dec. 14 she was named Conference Player of the Week. She has led the Green Wave in scoring in six of the team's 12 games this season.
2. Jordan currently ranks in the top 10 in the American Athletic Conference in scoring (14.7) and field goal percentage (.479). She leads all freshman in The American in scoring.
3. Jordan led the Green Wave to a win at Tulsa the last time out. She tied her career high with 22 points, while also have the best shooting day of her career going 8-9 from the field and 4-4 from three. She earned her fourth Freshman of the Week award for her efforts.
4. Freeman leads the Green Wave and ranks fourth in the AAC with 8.7 rebounds per game. She is second on the team and eighth in the conference with 14.4 points a game.
5. Senior Arsula Clark earned Preseason Second Team All-AAC honors. She currently ranks third on the team in scoring with a 13.5 points per game average. At ECU, she led the team in scoring with a season-high 28 points.
SERIES HISTORY – HOUSTON
• The Green Wave and the Cougars have met 46 times in program history with Tulane holding a 29-17 edge.
• The Green Wave took the last meeting between the two teams earlier this season, 76-62, in Houston. The Cougars had previously taken the last four meetings between the two teams.
• Senior Krystal Freeman led the Green Wave with 20 points and five steals, while junior Dynah Jones added 14 points and a career-high nine rebounds in Houston earlier this season.
• Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton holds a 28-16 all-time record
against Houston in her career at Tulane.
SCOUTING THE COUGARS
• Houston enters its matchup with Tulane carrying an 8-5 overall record and a 5-4 conference mark. The Cougars are coming off a 50-38 loss against UCF.
• The Cougars are second in the AAC in 3-point field goal percentage defense (.250) and offensive rebounds per game (14.8).
• Tulsa ranks in the top five in the conference in scoring offense (66.7), scoring defense (64.1), scoring margin (+2.6), field goal percentage defense (.390), 3-point field goal percentage (.301), rebounding offense (40.2), blocked shots (4.0), assists (13.5) and steals (10.7).
• Redshirt sophomore Britney Onyeje leads the team in scoring at 10.9 points per game. She ranks 17th in the AAC in the category.
• Junior guard Dymond Gladney is second on the team with 8.8 points and 3.1 assists per game.
• Senior guard Julia Blackshell-Fair is the top rebounder for the Cougars at 5.8 per game. She also leads the team with 3.7 assists and adds 8.3 points a game.
• Houston head coach Ronald Hughey is in his seventh season on the bench for the Cougars. He has posted a 79-119 mark since arriving in Houston.
AMONG THE LEAGUE LEADERS
• Tulane ranks among the league's top five in 15 different statistical categories.
• The Green Wave leads the conference in field goal percentage at .434. They rank second the conference in scoring (69.6), scoring margin (+9.4), assists (15.2) and assist/turnover ratio (1.0).
FRESHMAN LEADS THE WAY
• Freshman Jerkaila Jordan currently leads the Green Wave with 14.7 points, 34 assists, 20 steals and 14 made three-point field goals.
• She is second on the team with 10 blocked shots and third averaging 4.8 rebounds.
LOUISIANA TALENT
• Freshman Jerkaila Jordan comes to Tulane after winning four straight Louisiana High School State Championships at John Curtis. She was named the MVP of each championship game.
• Jordan was named the Gatorade Player of the Year and Miss Basketball in the state of Louisiana in 2020. She was also the No. 45 recruit in the nation coming out of high school.
• She opened her collegiate career with 17 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals against Nicholls.
• Jordan earned AAC Freshman of the Week honors for her efforts against Nicholls.
• She followed that performance up with 20 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals at South Alabama. The freshman guard shot 2-3 from behind the arc and 4-4 from the charity stripe in Mobile, Ala.
• Jordan was named player of the week from the AAC on Dec. 14.
• The standout freshman earned her third AAC Freshman of the Week Award on Jan. 4, after logging 15 points, three rebounds and three steals in the win over Memphis.
• The New Orleans native earned her fourth Freshman of the Week Honor after tying her career-high with 22 points in the win at Tulsa. She had a career day shooting going 8-9 from the field and 4-4 from three against the Golden Hurricane.
STOCKTON THE LEGEND
• Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton has amassed 593 NCAA wins in her 30-year coaching career. This number currently ranks 19th among all active Division I coaches. Stockton has the most wins of any coach in the American Athletic Conference.
