
Tulane Falls to Houston at Home, 71-64

NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University women's basketball team fell to Houston, 71-64, in Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse tonight.
Tulane (8-5, 4-4) outshot Houston (9-5, 6-4) .443-.411 from the floor, but the Cougars took a .316-.214 edge from three. The Green Wave logged 39 rebounds and 14 assists, while Houston recorded 34 boards and 14 assists.
Freshman Jerkaila Jordan led the Olive and Blue with 19 points, four assists and three steals. Junior Mia Heide was the top rebounder for the Green Wave with 10 boards. She also added four points and three assists. Seniors Krystal Freeman and Arsula Clark joined Jordan as the only three Tulane players in double figures with 16 and 14 points, respectively.
Both teams started slow in the second half with neither taking control through the first five minutes of the third quarter. Tulane grabbed an eight-point lead at 40-32 with six minutes left in the period. Houston then went on a 10-0 run to take a 42-40 advantage with two minutes left in the quarter. Tulane outscored the Cougars 6-3 the rest of the way to lead 46-45 going into the fourth.
Houston used an 11-3 run to take a 58-53 lead with 4:29 left in the game. Tulane trailed 65-55 with 1:28 left then forced three Houston turnovers and reeled off seven straight points to make the Cougars' lead 65-62 with 41 seconds to play. Tulane was never able to retake the lead and fell 71-64.
Houston registered nine steals and forced Tulane to turn the ball over 19 times in the game.
Houston jumped out to an early 12-2 lead to open the game. The Green Wave then went on an 18-2 run to close the quarter with a 20-14 lead. Jordan opened the run with two free throws and a three. She had nine points total during the first quarter.
Houston opened the second quarter with a 9-2 run to take a 23-22 advantage with five minutes remaining. The Green Wave responded with an 8-2 run of their own to take the lead back at 30-25 at the 2:27 mark. The two teams traded buckets the rest of the way and the Olive and Blue led 34-32 at the break.
Jordan led all scorers with 11 points in the first half, while Clark added seven for the Green Wave. Tulane shot 48.1 percent from the field and out-rebounded Houston 19-13 in the opening 20 minutes. Clark and Heide led the way on the boards in the first half pulling down four apiece.
Miya Crump led the Cougars with 17 points and eight rebounds.
Up next, the Green Wave will stay home as they host Temple for two games this weekend. Tulane will play Temple Saturday, Jan. 30, at 12 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 31, at 11 a.m. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN platforms with Saturday's matchup being aired on ESPN+ and Sunday's on ESPNU.
