Jan 28, 2021 | Men's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS – Following a 12-day hiatus between games, the Tulane men's basketball team suffered an 83-60 American Athletic Conference home loss to sixth-ranked Houston on Thursday evening at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
Four Green Wave (6-5, 1-5 AAC) players scored in double figures, led by redshirt junior Jordan Walker's 16 points, four assists and two steals. Junior Gabe Watson scored 13 points and redshirt freshman Tylan Pope added 12 points and five rebounds off the bench.
Sophomore Jaylen Forbes added 11 points and six boards, while sophomore Kevin Cross grabbed a career-high nine rebounds.
In addition to scoring 46-second-half points, Tulane outscored Houston, 30-26, in the paint and 7-5 off turnovers while winning the turnover battle, 10-9.
Cameron Tyson led the Cougars (14-1, 9-1 AAC) with 31 points off the bench on 11-of-18 shooting including 9-of-15 from 3-point range. Tramon Mark chipped in 16 points, while Justin Gorham grabbed 14 of his game-high 15 rebounds in the first half.
Tulane's defense operated effectively in the first five minutes of action, holding Houston to just 2-of-9 shooting from the floor during that span. After three free throws made by freshman Ben Callahan-Gold cut the deficit to two, the Cougars raced out on a 13-0 scoring run in just three minutes time to take a 20-5 advantage at the 11:37 mark.
The Green Wave struggled to get their offense going, making just two of their first 15 shot attempts, as the Cougars opened up their lead to as large as 30 in the first half before holding the same margin, 44-14, heading into halftime.
After Houston scored on its first possession of the second half, Tulane scored seven straight points and nine of the next 10 points after a layup by Kevin Cross cut the deficit to 47-23 with 16:41 left in the game.
The Cougars' lead grew to as many as 32 with under 13 minutes remaining, but the Green Wave were unable to string together any significant offensive gains down the stretch. Houston kept its advantage over 25 points for a majority of the remainder of the night to close out their seventh consecutive win.
Tulane shot 20-of-63 (.317) overall, 4-of-23 (.174) beyond the 3-point arc and 16-of-20 (.800) at the free throw line. Houston finished the night shooting 31-of-65 (.477) from the field, 13-of-32 (.406) from outside and 8-of-11 (.727) at the foul stripe.
Up next, Tulane heads north to Philadelphia in search of a regular-season series split at Temple on Sunday, January 31. Tipoff is set for 11 a.m. (CT) and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
