Tulane Outlasts Southeastern to Win Season Opener

NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University women's basketball team opened the 2021-22 season with a win over Southeastern Louisiana 66-58 Tuesday at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.

Four players posted double digits in the scoring column for the Green Wave as Dynah Jones led the way with 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field. Moon Ursin followed with 15 points to go along with eight rebounds and two steals in her regular season debut for Tulane. Rounding out the top scorers for the Wave were Arsula Clark with 13 and Krystal Freeman with 12.

As a team, Tulane held SLU to just 37 percent shooting, including just 31 percent from beyond the arc. The Green Wave connected at a 40 percent clip from the field for the game and edged out the Lions 40-37 off the glass.

The Olive and Blue defense forced the Lions into 17 turnovers which translated into 19 points on the other end of the court. Freeman and Jones tied for the team lead with three steals apiece adding to the team total of 10.

The Green Wave took the early lead 7-2 to open the first quarter, but after withstanding the initial surge from Tulane, SLU made its move. The Lions outscored Tulane 14-7 the final eight minutes of the quarter to close the opening frame with a 16-14 lead.

Tulane pulled it back to a tie twice in the second quarter, but never got over the hump to retake the lead before the half. After the Green Wave knotted the score at 28 with just over one minute left, SLU put together a 5-2 scoring run in the final minute to send Tulane into the locker room down 33-29.

In the third quarter, Tulane turned the corner scoring 10 unanswered to give the Wave its first lead since the first quarter. With 5:18 left in the third, Ursin took control for Tulane to lead a 13-0 run and put the Green Wave up 52-39. The Olive and Blue outscored the Lions 25-12 in the third to take a 54-45 advantage into the final 10 minutes.

Southeastern didn't shy away in the fourth, chipping away at Tulane's lead by going on their own nine-point run to cut the lead to two with 1:26 left to play. The Green Wave responded with a clutch three by Jones and a strong and-one bucket for Freeman which proved to be the dagger for Tulane to put away SLU 66-58.

Tulane heads to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on November 14th for its first road test of the season against the University of Alabama. The Green Wave and Crimson Tide will tip off at 2 p.m.
