GREENVILLE, N.C. – The No. 22 Tulane University baseball team dropped a hard-fought 7-4 decision to No. 13 East Carolina University in game one of its doubleheader Saturday afternoon inside Lewis Field at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
With the loss, Tulane dropped to 24-16 overall and 13-4 in American Athletic Conference play. The Green Wave's loss also marked the first time since March 27-28 that Tulane has dropped back-to-back games.
Tulane's setback also marked the first time this season the Green Wave lost a game in a doubleheader matchup.
Green Wave starter Jack Aldrich got the start for Tulane and suffered his second loss of the year. The California native battled throughout the afternoon as he worked 5.0 innings, gave up seven hits and was tagged for four runs. He also struck out five of the 26 batters he faced.
Senior Trent Johnson came on in relief of Aldrich in the sixth and worked 3.0 innings. Johnson gave up three runs and struck out three.
Tulane smashed out nine hits as a team, but also stranded 11 runners on base.
Freshman Jacob LaPrairie drove in a pair of runs. Tulane also had two-hit performances from freshman Chase Engelhard, junior Trevor Minder and freshman Simon Baumgardt.
Tulane leadoff hitter Collin Burns also collected a hit and drove in a run. With his hit, Burns extended his on-base streak to 23 straight games. Freshman Bennett Lee was held without a hit, but did reach base for the 22nd consecutive game.
Tulane opened the scoring in the third, but ECU responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Green Wave added a run in the fifth to trim the Pirates lead to two. Two innings later, the Pirates added a pair of runs to make the count 6-2.
The Green Wave made one last push down the stretch, as LaPrairie's two-out single in the eighth inning drove in a pair of runs to move Tulane to within two at 6-4. ECU once again responded in the bottom half of the frame to push its lead to 7-4.
Tulane went down in order in the top half of the ninth, as the Pirates secured the win.
