Tulane Women’s Basketball Falls Short Against No. 24 USF
Jan 12, 2022 | Women's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane women's basketball (8-5, 0-2) came up short against the 24th-ranked Bulls of USF as it fell 75-62 in its second game of conference play on Wednesday night in Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse. The Green Wave forced the Bulls into 15 turnovers and just 21.4 percent shooting from beyond the arc but was unable to overcome its own shooting woes hitting at a 28.3 percent clip on the other end of the floor.
Two Green Wave players finished with double figures in scoring as redshirt senior Arsula Clark led the team with 17 points to go along with five assists. Dynah Jones followed in the scoring column with 16 points and shooting 12-of-16 from the charity stripe.
Redshirt seniors Krystal Freeman fell just shy of her sixth double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. Moon Ursin and Anijah Grant rounded out the top scorers for Tulane with seven points each.
Both teams were a little slow out of the gate in the opening frame as each team shot below 50 percent from the field and combined to make just one shot from downtown. Clark knocked down a pull-up jumper as time expired in the first quarter to send the teams to their benches tied at 14.
A quick five points from Freeman put Tulane in front to start the second quarter, but USF bounced right back to knot the score at 19. The Green Wave reclaimed the lead and held the advantage through most of the frame until the Bulls closed the half on an 8-1 run in the final two minutes to hit the locker with a 33-29 lead.
Tulane drew first blood in the second half as Jones knocked down one from the charity to cut the deficit to three. However, the Bulls responded with an 11-4 run over the next five minutes to extend their advantage to 10. USF ultimately stretched its lead out to 12 points in the quarter, but Kaila Anderson drained a three in the final seconds to bring the Wave within nine at 54-45 heading into the fourth.
The Green Wave battled in the final frame to cut the deficit down to four with 3:28 on the clock. After pulling within four Tulane was hit by four unanswered from the Bulls to retake control of the contest. Tulane was unable to mount a response as USF pushed its advantage back out to double digits with the Wave ultimately losing 75-62. Tulane scored 13 of its 17 points in the fourth quarter from the charity stripe with Jones shooting 8-of-10 and Clark knocking down 4-of-4.
