Makuvire Wins Arturo Barrios Invite, Men's Team Takes Third Overall
Oct 15, 2022 | Cross Country
COLLEGE STATION, TX – Junior Bradley Makuvire won his first cross country meet wearing the Olive and Blue, winning the Arturo Barrios Invitational with a time of 23:25.5.
"Bradley is a testament to what staying the course can do," director of cross country and track & field Adrian Myers said. "He had an injury over the summer and now is really starting to come into top form with time left to get better. He's a great young man, and I am blessed to work with him towards his goals."
The men's team finished third overall with 140 points, just behind Ohio State (136) and meet hosts Texas A&M (71).
Aaron Gilliam crossed the finish line in 12th with a time of 24:07.2. Finishing just out of the top 20 was Evans Kipchuma, who came in 21st with a time of 24:13.5.
"We keep getting better each week as a program and trying to build that identity as to what being a Green Wave cross country athlete means," Myers said. "That's what you want to see as we build for this year, and into the future. We are shaping something that can be successful and sustain success into the future."
On the women's side, Mackenzie Callahan came in at 21:05.7 to place 21st. The next best time for the Green Wave was Danna Diaz in 45th at 21:41.0.
"I feel really good about where we are right now," Myers said. "We have some things that we need to do to kind of get over the hump. Our women really need the rest and it's showing. They've been racing pretty tired for a month now. That's an easy fix. The men just came out of being under the weather and are now showing they are ready to rest al ittle going into the championship season. We have worked about as hard as we could to this point and now we need to fill in the gaps and cover some small details to be ready for AAC and the NCAA rounds in November. The Wave is beginning to Roll."
This was the Green Wave's final regular season meet as it heads to the American Athletic Conference Championships at the end of the month in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
