Tulane Finishes Fifth in ICSA Open Match Race Championship

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Tulane University Sailing finished fifth out of ten teams in the 2022 ICSA Open Match Race National Championship on Sunday. The Green Wave capped its weekend of racing in the win column by defeating Tufts in a sail off for fifth overall.

"We're really pleased with our showing this weekend," head coach Charles Higgins said. "The team had put in a lot of time training for this event, and to finish 5th in the nation with such a select field is fantastic."

The regatta opened with a single round robin on Friday. Tulane completed the round robin ranked eighth among the competing teams after winning two of its nine races. The Wave earned wins over Wisconsin and King's Point.

"We had a few too many unforced errors in the first round, which had us facing a tough draw in the knockout rounds," Higgins said. "We had a good battle with this year's champion Yale but lost 2-1."

The Green Wave bounced back the final two days of racing to reach a sail off to secure a top five finish. Tulane squared off against Tufts in the sail off to earn fifth place overall. The Wave won the first race and the third race against Tufts to claim the overall victory and take fifth in the regatta.

"The team rebounded though and came back to take a convincing win in the five versus six seed sail off to end up fifth overall," Higgins stated. "We're looking forward to carrying the momentum of a couple top performances at our fall national championships into our spring season."
