Bats Stay Hot In Fourth Straight Win
Mar 2, 2022 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS- The Tulane University baseball team (8-1) defeated Texas Southern University (6-4) by a score of 10-2 on Wednesday night inside Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
The Green Wave scored ten runs on nine hits. Nine Tulane pitchers took the mound, and held TSU to two hits in the Wave's fourth straight victory.
"All-in-all, we continued to play good defense, throw strikes, and come up with some opportunistic hits," head coach Travis Jewett said. "I like the depth of this team. We made some changes, got some guys of their feet, and had a lot of firsts tonight."
Tulane has now scored 46 runs in its past three games.
Freshman Grant Siegel got his first start of the year for the Green Wave and went two hitless innings, striking out three. The right-hander had made three previous relief appearances for Tulane.
In the bottom of the second inning, junior-college transfer Seth Beckstead launched a mammoth 380-foot two-run home run over the wall in left to give the Wave a 2-0 lead.
Tulane opened up a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Chase Engelhard crushed a two-out, bases-clearing double off the top of the wall in left.
"I knew I struck it well," Engelhard said. "Caught it a little deep, but I knew it had a chance. I didn't even know it hit the top of the wall, I was just running hard."
Redshirt junior Lane Thomas pitched scoreless third and fourth innings. Thomas also picked off the nation's leading base-stealer, John Thomas, at third base in the top of the fourth.
TSU put up two runs in the top of the fifth and had a runner on third with two outs when Jared Hart made a sliding grab in shallow center to kill the rally.
Engelhard came up huge again in the bottom of the seventh, ripping a two-run double down the right field line, extending the lead to 7-2. Freshman Teo Banks followed up Engelhard with a two-RBI double of his own, the first of the outfielder's career.
Freshman Gavin Schulz got an at-bat in the bottom of the eighth and slapped a double to left for his first career hit. Jackson Linn followed up Schulz with an RBI-single, pushing the lead to 10-2, the final score on the night.
"The game in front of us is the most important one," Jewett said. "Now this one's over, we found a way to win, and we are looking forward to playing a very good Missippi State team this weekend."
