Mar 2, 2022 | Women's Basketball
WICHITA, Ks. – Tulane women's basketball (20-8, 11-5) fell just short of its 10th-straight win as it dropped a nail biter on the road in overtime to Wichita State (14-15, 5-11) 84-83 on Wednesday night. The final minute of the game saw four lead changes and two ties, but the Green Wave was unable to change the lead one last time on its final possession.
Redshirt junior Dynah Jones led Tulane on offense with her second 20-point performance in a week. The New Orleans native finished with 24 points, four rebounds and three steals. Arsula Clark followed with 18 points to go with seven assists. Clark's 18-point effort pushed her across the 1,000-point plateau during her time at Tulane. She now has 1,002 points as a member of the Green Wave and 1,713 points in her collegiate career. Moon Ursin rounded out the offensive leaders for Tulane posting her 11th double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Ursin also added with five assists and four steals.
The contest was rather evenly matched across the board with Tulane shooting 41 percent and the Shockers shooting 44 percent from the field. The two teams were tight around the rim as well with the Green Wave winning the rebounding battle 42-41 and Wichita State winning points in the paint 46-42. The difference on the night came from beyond the arc as the Shockers hit eight threes to Tulane's four.
Tulane got out to a bit of a slow start in the first quarter as everything seemed to be clicking for Wichita State in the opening minutes. The Wave faced a 22-14 deficit with two minutes remaining in the frame when it turned up the full-court pressure to force the Shockers into a pair of turnovers and finish on an 8-2 run to hit the first break trailing 24- 22.
The second frame stayed much closer as the largest advantage reached five points in favor of Wichita State with 6:22 on the clock. Jones responded immediately for the Green Wave with three from the right wing before the two squads traded free throws over the next few minutes. Irina Parau brought some energy for Tulane to close the half with a block on defense followed by a layup on the other end to send the Wave to the locker room down 37-36.
The energy started in the favor of the Shockers in the second half with Tulane's deficit reaching as many as seven just two minutes into the third quarter. The Wave battled back in response with a 12-4 run to take its first lead since the opening minute when Tulane scored the first points of the contest. The frame ended with six unanswered points by the Green Wave as Tulane would take 57-52 lead into the final quarter.
Tulane continued to hold its lead through the first four minutes of the fourth quarter, but Wichita State did not go down quietly retaking the lead with 5:46 to play. The Wave and the Shockers went back and forth the final five minutes with neither team leading by more than two points. Both teams sank clutch free throws including one from Clark with nine seconds left that sent the game into overtime tied 74-74.
The Green Wave took the early advantage in the overtime period from the free throw line. The lead did not last as the teams met in three ties including two in the final minute. Clark gave Tulane the lead 83-82 with 32 seconds left, but the Shockers got a whistle on the next possession and knocked in two free throws to retake the lead with 15 second remaining. The Wave had two more looks to go back in front on its final possession, but each time the rims were unfriendly as Tulane dropped a heartbreaker in overtime 84-83.
Up next, the Green Wave will head to Fort Worth, Texas, to compete in the American Athletic Conference Tournament. Tulane will be the third seed in the tournament and will face the winner of six seed Houston and 11 seed Cincinnati on Tuesday, March 8, at 8 p.m. CT.
