
Tulane Women’s Basketball to Face Winner of Houston and Cincinnati in Quarterfinals of AAC Championship Tuesday

NEW ORLEANS – The No. 3 seed Tulane University women's basketball (20-8, 11-5) will take on the winner of No. 6 seed Houston (14-14, 7-9) and No. 11 seed Cincinnati (11-16, 4-11) in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference Championship on Tuesday. Tipoff for the quarterfinal matchup is scheduled for 8 p.m. CT at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.

The Green Wave's quarterfinal matchup will be aired live on ESPN+. Fans also can listen to the contest live on the Tulane Sports Network from Learfield on 88.3 WRBH with Gus Kattengell or streaming on the Tulane Athletics App and The Varsity Network App.

With a win on Tuesday, Tulane would advance to the semifinals of the AAC Championship for the fourth time since joining the league for the 2014-15 season. The Green Wave has reached the quarterfinals of the tournament now seven times and hold a 3-3 record in the round. The last time the Wave moved on to the semifinals came last season after beating Temple in the quarterfinals. Tulane then fell 51-47 to USF in the semifinals.

Tulane went 3-0 this year against Houston and Cincinnati. The Green Wave swept the season series against the Cougars with a 64-59 win on the road and a 76-72 victory in Uptown. This would be the second time the Green Wave and Houston have squared off in the AAC Championship. Tulane came out on top against the Cougars 64-39 in the first round of the tournament in 2015. The Wave defeated the Bearcats in their only matchup this year 80-56 at home. Tulane has never faced Cincinnati in the AAC Championship.

A trio earned conference honors for Tulane at the conclusion of the regular season. Redshirt senior Moon Ursin was named the AAC Newcomer of the Year and earned First Team All-AAC Honors. Krystal Freeman and Dynah Jones each landed Third Team All-AAC selection for the Green Wave.

Four players are averaging at least 11 points for the Olive and Blue this season with Ursin and Jones leading the team each averaging 13.7 points. Ursin adds 8.6 rebounds per game to the stat sheet and ranks third in the AAC in rebounding and seventh in scoring. Jones rates ninth in the league in scoring and is averaging a team-high 15.1 points in league games. Arsula Clark follows with 12.0 points and 4.1 assists while Freeman rounds out the top scorers for Tulane posting 11.8 points and 7.6 boards per contest.
Houston enters as the six seed following a 71-38 loss at South Florida in the regular season finale on Wednesday, March 2. The Cougars are led by Laila Blair who is averaging 12.0 points per game. As a team, Houston rates third in the league in scoring offense (63.5), steals per game (10.1) and blocked shots per game (4.4). Under head coach Ronald Hughey, Houston holds a 2-7 record at the AAC Championship.

Cincinnati (11-16, 4-11) enters the tournament at the 11 seed after dropping its season finale 74-39 at UCF on Saturday, Feb. 26. The Bearcats are led by the duo of Jillian Hayes and Akira Levy. Hayes paces Cincinnati with 11.7 points per game while Levy follows with 10.8 points and a conference-best 5.6 assists per contest. The Bearcats are 7-8 all-time in the AAC Championship and 5-3 under head coach Michelle Clark-Heard, including a trip to the finals in 2020.
