Tulane Sailing COED Team Finishes Fourth; Women’s Team Lands Second Place Finish
Mar 6, 2022 | Sailing
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University sailing COED and women's teams wrapped up a pair of separate regattas Sunday with both squads finishing in the top four of each event. The Green Wave COED team finished fourth among 10 teams at the Bob Bavier Team Race in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, while the Tulane women's crew landed in second out of six teams at the Green Wave Women's Team Race on Lake Pontchartrain.
"We had a quite similar day to yesterday," head coach Charles Higgins said. "We had some really solid wins where it felt like we did everything right, but also some losses where more than anything we shot ourselves in the foot."
The Green Wave posted an overall record of 11-7 through both rounds of the Bob Bavier Team Race to land fourth thanks to its 2-0 record against UC Santa Barbara to break a tie. The Wave went 5-4 in nine races on Sunday recording wins over Georgetown, Jacksonville, UC Santa Barbara, South Florida and Wisconsin. The Tulane COED crew was led by skippers Marcus Huttunen, Cameron Giblin and Asher Zittrer along with crews Grace Siwicki, Andrea Riefkohl-Gonzalez and Gillian Perrell.
"Still overall a very positive outcome at this event," Higgins said. "Making it into the Final 4 at these major events is always one of our goals. We'll keep improving and hopefully in the coming weeks we can start to see some solid improvement."
On the waters of Lake Pontchartrain, the Tulane sailing women's team went 6-4 on the second day of racing in the Green Wave Women's Team Race. In the final two rounds of the regatta the Wave earned wins over College of Charleston twice, Wisconsin twice, Jacksonville once, and South Florida once to secure a second-place finish behind Boston College. Skippers Caroline Benson, Mia Hanes and Ciara Rodriguez-Horan along with crews Lydia Brown, Abigail Borggaard, Sarah Grace Clifton, Isabella Bentz, Anna Richard and Lucy Spearman led the Green Wave on the water across the five rounds of racing in the regatta.
This was a great weekend of racing for the women's team," assistant coach Jocelyn Rovniak said. "We definitely had some learning experiences this weekend that will push us to be stronger as a team as the season progresses. I'm proud that we were able to work together to maintain our standing over the weekend."
The Tulane sailing COED and women's teams will be back in action March 12-13 as the COED squad will race at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. and the women's crew will compete in the Navy Women's Team Race in Annapolis, Maryland.
