NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University baseball team (24-13-1) fell to No. 6 Southern Mississippi (28-8) in an 11-5 ballgame on Tuesday evening inside Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Southern Miss. showed why they are one of the top pitching staffs in the country as they struck out 17 and buckled down when needed, holding the Wave to just two-for-sixteen with runners in scoring position.
"We didn't make them make plays and we gave them a bunch of freebies tonight," head coach Travis Jewett said. "We've got a big series coming up this weekend and we are going to need everyone."
Freshman Chandler Welch made his third start of the season and allowed no runs on one hit while striking out three over two innings of work.
Sophomore Ben Ethridge got the start for the Golden Eagles, allowed one earned run, and struck out seven over four innings of work.
The Green Wave struck first in the bottom of the second when Chase Engelhard and Trevor Minder led off the frame with back-to-back singles before Brady Hebert grounded out to second for an RBI.
Graduate student Keaton Knueppel followed Welch with two scoreless innings of his own.
The Golden Eagles took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth.
Tulane threatened in the bottom of the sixth when Bennett Lee and Engelhard both singled to put runners on first and second with one out. The pair of sophomores moved to second and third on a wild pitch before Hebert was hit by a pitch, loading the bases, but the Wave was unable to put any runs across.
Southern Miss. added four runs in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to 7-1.
Groff got one run back for the good guys with a solo shot to left to lead off the bottom of the seventh, his eighth home run of the year.
Later in the inning, Jackson Linn lifted a sacrifice fly to center that scored Luis Aviles. Engelhard then collected his third hit of the game, the first for Tulane with a RISP, scoring Brady Marget and reducing the lead to 7-4.
The Golden Eagles re-established a five-run lead in the top of the eighth with two more runs and added another pair in the top of the ninth.
The Green Wave pulled a run back in the bottom of the ninth thanks to an RBI-double by freshman Gavin Schulz.
UP NEXT: Tulane is hosting conference leader ECU this weekend for a three-game series. First pitch on Friday is at 2:00 p.m.
