Apr 21, 2022 | Women's Tennis
TULSA, Okla. – The No. 5 seed Tulane University women's tennis fell to the No. 4 seed 55th-ranked Memphis in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference Championship 4-3 Thursday afternoon. After facing a 2-0 deficit the Green Wave battled back to tie the score at 2-2 and 3-3, but ultimately fell one point shy of winning the match.
The Green Wave finished the year with a 12-9 record which includes an impressive home season that ended with a 9-2 mark. The leading duo for the Wave this season, junior Lahari Yelamanchili and sophomore Charlotte Russell, ended their season as the No. 46 doubles team in the country and posted a 15-2 record on the year.
Tulane opened doubles play strong getting out to a 3-2 lead on all three courts against the Tigers. Yelamanchili and Russell continued to roll on court one in doubles action as they earned the first win of the match 6-3. Unfortunately, the Wave was unable to hold the momentum on courts two and three as Memphis battled back to pick up wins on both courts and take the doubles point.
Trailing 1-0 entering singles play, the Green Wave bounced back with some fight winning the first set on three courts. Memphis earned another point on court one putting Tulane behind 2-0, but the Wave was up to the challenge. Within moments of each other Jiayun Zhu and Adelaide Lavery each picked up two-set victories pull Tulane back to a tie with the Tigers 2-2. After Memphis went back in front 3-2, Kristen Borland tied it once again with a hard-fought three-set win 6-0, 3-6, 6-3. Yelamanchili battled to a tiebreak to force a third and decisive set on court two, but ultimately fell in the tiebreak as Memphis managed to secure the match 4-3.
