NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University sailing COED and women's teams each took home the top spot in the SEISA Team Race Championships on Saturday. Both teams for the Green Wave recorded undefeated days on the water to claim the championships on Lake Pontchartrain.
"It was great to come out and have a dominant day at the conference championships," head coach Charles Higgins said. "Both the women's and coed squads were able to come out and get the job done. We expect to win, but we have to be in the right mindset and do the little things along the way."
The Tulane women's team began the day by rolling past Texas in three rounds of racing in the SEISA Women's Team Race Championship. Skippers Caroline Benson, Lucy Spearman, Mia Hanes and Ciara Rodriguez-Horan teamed up with crews Lydia Brown, Abigail Borggaard, Gillian Perrell, Essie Clifton and Lucy Spearman to race by the Longhorns with a 3-0 record.
Moving on to the SEISA Open Team Championship, the Green Wave COED team dominated the competition to take home the win with an undefeated record as well. Tulane went 9-0 on the waters of Lake Pontchartrain going 3-0 against Baylor, North Texas and Texas. The Wave was led to its second consecutive first place finish by skippers Thad Lettsome, Aden King, Cameron Giblin, Joseph Solmo, Asher Zittrer and Quinn Keenan along with crews Grace Siwicki, Alex Makoid, Andrea Riefkohl-Gonzalez, Essie Clifton, Gillian Perrell and Ellie Spearman.
"It feels good to come away with the wins, and now we look forward to next week when we learn our fate for the Team Race National Champs when the selection committee makes their announcement," Higgins said.
Up next, the Green Wave sailing team will travel to Annapolis, Maryland, to race in the Navy Spring Regatta on April 16-17.
