Martin’s Magic Locks Up Five-Set Match
Aug 27, 2022 | Women's Volleyball
BEAUMONT, TEXAS — The Tulane University volleyball team (2-1) claimed its second victory of the day to close out the Katrinka Crawford Invitational in a five-set nailbiter (25-26, 21-25, 24-26, 26-24, 15-11).
The Green Wave offense hit .218 in the match and held the Cardinals to a .211 attack percentage. Senior outside side hitter Mackenzie Martin led the Wave with 29 kills, the 12th most in program history and hit .319 in the match. Martin also landed 13 digs in the match to complete the double-double.
Middle hitter Kayla Kaiser also got in on the action claiming 11 kills, an ace and a block. Junior libero Sophia Ervanian was the ultimate defender in the match with 26 digs and seven assists. Senior setter Kate Van Houten contributed 35 assists as well as five kills and seven digs.
Set one was all Wave. Tulane finished with 15 kills and hit .464 to insure a 25-16 finish.
In set two, Lamar jumped out to an early lead. The Demons held a large advantage until their final five points, when Tulane strung together four kills, coupled with a few Cardinal errors to get right back into the match. The late push wasn't enough to lock up the set, however, with the Wave dropping it 21-25.
The third set also went to the Cardinals, but not without extra volleyball. The Green Wave took the lead for the first time at 18-17. It would hold onto the lead with one point left to go, 24-20, only for the Cardinals to score six unanswered. The set went final, 26-24.
Down two sets to one, set four got off to a much-needed hot start. Tulane got out to a quick 8-3 lead, which included kills from Martin, Kaiser and Melissa Kolurbasi. Lamar strung together a couple of runs to get right back in the set, 16-15. With more extra volleyball Tulane countered to take the set 26-24.
After dropping the first two points in set five, the Wave was all gas, taking the lead 5-4 off of a kill from Kaiser. The final push was three kills from Mackenzie Martin to end the set 15-11 and to take the match 3-2.
Tulane heads back to New Orleans for its home opener next weekend. The Green Wave will take on Howard University on Friday, Sept. 2 at noon inside Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
