Cross Country Opens 2022 Season With High Expectations
Sep 1, 2022 | Cross Country
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane cross country begins their 2022 season this Friday at the New Orleans XC Opener hosted by the University of New Orleans.
The men enter the season ranked fourth in the South Central Region by U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The women enter the season ranked fifth, their highest ever in the South Central Region.
"We're excited to open our season up on the other side of town against most of the state," director of cross country/track and field Adrian Myers said. "We will compete a majority of our roster this weekend and then follow up with mostly our freshman next weekend at Rice. We're holding out a couple of our top athletes this week to continue their training progressions."
The Green Wave is the highest rank team in a field that includes UNO, LSU, Louisiana-Lafayette, Nicholls, Xavier, Loyola, Dillard and Southeastern.
With a roster full of newcomers, Tulane looks to have multiple runners finish in the top ten this weekend. Freshmen Sofia McNerney, Harper Shaw and Reese Ragland, as well as transfers Dana Diaz and Allie Nelson highlight the women's side.
On the men's side former Southland Conference champ and 2021 NCAA qualifier Bradley Makuvire is expected to have a strong season. Transfers Aaron Gilliam and Kyle Johnson, as well as Tulane returned Tucker Poshard look to hold top sports on the Tulane roster.
"We're just getting everyone on the same page right now in training and with good health," Myers said. "With a mixed bag of freshman and transfers, we have a lot of moving pieces. So we intend on putting out the typical early season feelers right now before going on a long stretch of solid training for the championship season in October and November."
Evans Kipchumba also looks to hold a major role in the Tulane season as he looks to defend his title having won this meet the last time it was held in 2020.
"I feel great about where we are right now and where we will end up," Myers said. "It's a process rebuilding a program, but this group has answered all challenges so far and will only look forward to our future."
